Shu Pulong has helped at least 1000 people bitten by snakes. “It was seeing people with snake bites that led me to this career,” he said.
In 1963, after his army service, Shu entered a medical school and later became a doctor of Chinese medicine. As part of his studies he had to work in the mountains. There he often heard of people who had their arms and legs cut off after a snake bite in order to save their lives.
“I was greatly upset when they told me the story of an old farmer I met. It was a very hot afternoon. The old man was pulling grass in his fields when he felt a pain in his left hand. He at once realized he had been bitten by a poisonous snake. In no time he wrapped(缠绕)a cloth tightly around his arm to stop the poison(毒)getting to his heart. Running home he shouted, `Bring me the knife' Minutes later the man lost his arm forever.”
“The heartbroken story touched me so much that I decided to devote myself to helping people bitten by snakes.” Shu added, “I worked very hard and tried my best to make a good snake doctor.” And at last he made it.

“Silence!” Mr Swales said, “Being a garbagemen is a difficult and useful job. We should all be thankful to Jodie's father.”
Jodie's father came to walk her home from school as usual, but she didn't run up to him the way she always did. When they got back home, Jodie went to her room and cried for a long time.
Her father came into her room, “What happened, Jodie? Why are you so sad?”
Jodie told her father what had happened and looked at him. He didn't seem angry or hurt. “Well,” he said, “they are right. Being a garbageman is a dirty job. Tomorrow's Saturday. Come to work with me, Jodie.”
The place really smell too good. Jodie wrinkled her nose. “Don't worry, kid. In five minutes you won't smell a thing.” said her father.
Everybody there was working hard, and they seemed to have a good time. Jodie's father handed her a pair of gloves and told her to get the little plastic bags and throw them into the truck.

Sure, it's hard to see uncertainty in such positive(积极的)light when you're out of work, or when you feel like you're failing. But uncertainty is really another word for chance.
When Allison graduated from Harvard, she had chan ces all over the place but had no idea what she wanted to do. She took a job in consulting(咨询), but she knew she wouldn't stay there. She took the GRE and scored so high that she was able to increase her income(收入)by teaching students. Still, she didn't think she wanted to go to graduate school. Allison knew she wasn't doing what she wanted, but she didn't know what she wanted.
She worried. All her friends were going to graduate school or starting their own businesses. She was lost and felt that she would never find anything out. After six years, Allison, by having a general(全面的)plan in mind, got married, moved to the Midwest, and used her consulting experience to get a great job. Allison realized that she spent her years finding her way: time well spent, and time we must all take if we're being honest with ourselves.
The only way to lead an interesting life is to face uncertainty and make a choice. Otherwise your life is not your own—it is a path someone else has chosen. Moments of uncertainty are when you create your life, when you become who you are. Uncertainty usually begins with a job hunt, but it doesn't end there. Every new role we take on means another round of uncertainty. Instead of fearing it, you should find some ways to deal with uncertainty.

WARNING(警告): Holding a cell phone against your ear or putting it in your pocket may be bad for your health. This sentence is a warning that you'd better not put it close to you when a new phone is bought. Apple company, for example, doesn't want iPhones to come closer to you than 1.5 centimeters; Research In Motion, BlackBerry's producer, recommends 2.5 centimeters.
If cell phone use can cause health problems, the result will be very serious. Americans spend 2.26 trillion minutes chatting on cell phones every year, which brings $109 billion for the wireless businessmen.
Devra Davis, an epidemiologist(皮肤病专家)who has worked for the University of Pittsburgh, has published a book about mobile phone radiation(辐射)"Disconnect." Davis studies how often brain cancer happens during different age groups. As a result of mobile phone radiation, she finds that a big increase(增长)in brain cancer in the 20-to-29 age group and a drop for the older people.
Children are more easily hurt by radiation than grown-ups, Ms. Davis and other scientists point out. But no studies have yet been finished on cell phone radiation and children, she says.
Henry Lai, a research professor, began lab radiation studies in 1980 and found that mice exposed to(暴露在) radiofrequency(电波频率)radiation had destroyed DNA in their brains.
Ms. Davis recommends using wired earphones(有线耳机)or the phone's speaker. Children should send text messages rather than call, she said, and pregnant women should keep phones away from their bodies.

CCTV reported that every year Chinese people throw away a lot of food which can feed 200 million people for a year.
Do we have too much food? Of course not. According to the UN World Food Programme, there were 900million hungry people all over the world in 2013. About six million children die of hunger every year.
So think about it. We should say no to people who waste food every day. An old saying goes, “Every grain on the plate comes from hard work.” It tells us everybody must save food.
Luckily, a number of people have realized the importance of saving food. Li Hong, a waitress in a restaurant in Jiangsu, once lost her job because she took some leftover(剩余的) food home for her son. But many people were by her side and criticized (批评) the waste of food.
What should we do in our daily life to stop wasting food? We can do many things to prevent it from happening. Here are some tips:
Don't order too much food in a restaurant. Only order as much as you can eat. If you can't eat all the food you order, take the rest of it home.
Don't be too picky(挑剔的) about food. Some food may not be tasty, but put body need it.
Don't keep too much food at home, especially for fruit and vegetables.
