    YOUTH DAY in China falls on May 4 every year. It is celebrated to honor the May Fourth Movement in 1919.

    When the phone rings and somebody says, "Fire!", the firemen move fast.

    The big, red fire truck goes through the streets on its way to a fire.

    When the fire engine arrives at the burning building, the firemen roll out the fire hose and 1 the ladders (梯子). Firemen take the hose as 2 to the fire as they can. Special clothes 3 them from the heat.

    Many students ask for advice about improving their English. There are three basic questions.

    This is a great way to learn English! Talk about the film or song with your friends, and guess the m       of the new words. Just enjoy yourself!

    The second question is about speaking. Sam, from Suzhou wrote, "Our school has a f      teacher. But I'm shy and can't speak to her. What should I do?"

    When I visit China, lots of people in the street say, "Hello! How are you? Where are you from? Do you like China?" These are good questions to s       a conversation. Many people are shy when they speak English, so before you begin, take a deep breath and smile! Smiling always helps.

    The third question is about vocabulary. Olive, from Anhui wrote, "I want to remember all the new words. I wrote them down, but I forget them q      , What should I do?"

    Try to remember eight or nine words a day. Write them on p      of paper and place them in your bedroom. Say the words when you see them, and change them every day.

    And when you're shopping, h       about counting the English words, or saying the English names for everything you see?

    Maybe it's a little difficult, but if you try your best to do it every day, you will be successful at last.

    Old George selected his food in the supermarket more carefully than NASA chose its astronauts. When he left the cashier, he was happy to think that he had saved 80 cents today.

    At the exit, the cold wind made him think of his gloves. He looked for them in his coat and pants but could not find them anywhere. He had bought the black gloves at a good price, for just $ 35, years ago. They were soft and very comfortable. He had taken great care of them. So they were in good condition.

    Before getting on the subway, he stepped into the supermarket again to see if by any chance his gloves had been returned to the lost and found office. "What color are they?" the woman in the office asked. "Black, "he answered. She looked into her drawer and took out of a pair of man's leather gloves. "Are they?"

    "Yes! Those are mine," George exclaimed, his eyes full of joy.
