    A father and his daughter were flying a kite in the park.     Friendship Day in India falls on the first Sunday of August every year. It is celebrated with many activities. Young people in India spend the day with their closest friends and have fun together. Most young people in India plan a movie or have a meal with their friends. Some friends may go on a drive to tourist places. Some friends go to the supermarket for shopping. On Friendship Day, most stores offer discounted (打折的) prices for customers and it is a perfect day to buy something for friends.

    Some friends go to parties that are organized by many restaurants. Such parties are very enjoyable. You can get food at a discounted price. Some friends just decide to meet up (相聚) at someone's home and talk about their happy time. The time good friends spend sitting together and talking over a cup of coffee is wonderful.

    Long-distance friends call up each other on this day and wish each other with warm feelings. Some of them even plan to meet up on this day. Yet some others plan a surprising visit just to see their friend gasp (喘息) in shock!

    To most of us, home is the safest and warmest place in the world. But seventh graders at Zhenhai Jiaochuan Academy of Ningbo are trying to figure out (想出) ways to escape (逃跑) their homes as quickly as possible in case of an emergency.

    Teachers asked students to draw emergency evacuation (紧急撤离) maps of their homes to learn about how to escape the event of a life.

    The project meant a lot to Shen Yechen. When he was younger, the 13 -year-old once played with fire and almost burned his family's house down. Since then, the possibility of another fire has always been on his mind. By drawing the map, he said he was able to overcome his fear.

    On his map, Shen marked possible sources of fire at home, including the fridge, computer and bookshelves. He said these areas should be avoided in the event of a fire.

    While most students only mapped out one evacuation route, Yan Junxiao, 13, made three. Yan and his parents live on the third floor of their building. At first, he thought his family could only escape by going down the stairs. But later, he was inspired by the way his family does laundry (洗衣服).

    Usually, Yan's family hangs laundry on their balcony. Sometimes their clothes fall to the second floor because of the wind. Instead of walking down the stairs, Yan's father sometimes climbs down outdoor air-conditioner units to get the clothes.

    Does this sound like a good evacuation route? Yan also suggested using a rope to climb out the window. "With so many ways to evacuate, I won't be scared, even if there is a real fire," said Yan.

    Several cars waited at the top of a slope ( 斜坡). As the whistle blew, the cars sped down the slope. Spectators (观众) cheered and clapped. But this was not a normal car race. The cars were made out of food.

    Students at Orefield Middle School in Pennsylvania, US, held the race early last month. They spent several weeks making their cars. The race was part of the school's STEMM class. STEMM stands for science, technology, engineering, math and medicine.

    The rules of the race were strict. The only non -food items allowed were toothpicks and popsicle sticks (冰棒棍). Some students used round bread or cookies for wheels. Some used a steak roll for the body.

    For some students, the most difficult part was not making the car, but trying not to eat the tasty food. "If you ate any of it, you got out," James Cipolla, 13, told The Morning Call.

    Cipolla worked with three other students on their car. They put a marshmallow ( 棉花糖) at the base of their car to help it move easily. But it melted during the race and didn't make it to the finals.

     "We still had fun anyway", said 14-year-old Andrew Maitski. "We learned about engineering and the basic parts of a car."

    Students who get tired of looking at the four walls of a classroom might like to take the nature course being offered by Carvel College again this summer. Groups of about a dozen students each, led by an experienced guide, will go on ten -day camping trips to the mountains to study the plants and animals that grow and live there.

    Students carry their own things which include sleeping bags, warm clothing, food and water, and other useful tools. And what do the students do all day? Well, as soon as the sun comes up, they eat breakfast and start climbing up the mountain trail (小路) to the next campground, which five to ten miles away. The students take notes when the guide points out different plants and animals alongside the trail. The climb is usually over by early afternoon, so the group spends the rest of the day resting or swimming in a mountain lake. Before dinner each night, they all come together and discuss the day's activities.

    At the end of the course, the students write reports using the information they have collected. But they don't mind at all. What they do mind is leaving the beauty of the wilderness (荒地) and the good friends they've made to return to their normal lives in the city.

    Where do you live when you travel? Most people usually live in the hotel,        some don't like it. Now there is a new kind of hotel — the minshuku (民宿). It first started in Japan, but now it can be        (easy) found in China. There are many differences between the minshuku and the hotel.
