Mark Twain, well known for his masterpieces like The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The adventures of Huckleberry Finn, in which he used his extraordinary writing techniques played a vital role in the history of American literature. He was regarded as a mirror of America not only because of the true and vivid description and representation in his pieces, but for his rich life experience including various people he had met on the steamboat and the things he had heard during his early life.

From the steamboat on the Mississippi to the development of railway later, from the California Gold Rush (淘金热) to the Civil War, Mark Twain's life experience was connected with American society at the same period of time. As a young country, America witnessed several events powerful enough to leave a significant influence on the development of the country. Mark Twain got involved in them and created them in his books.

Through various occupations, Mark Twain accumulated a rich knowledge of the society, which later vividly reappeared on the pages of his works. If it hadn't been for the abundant personal experience, there couldn't have been a perfect Mark Twain. Quite coincidently, Mo Yan, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature, also mentioned in his speech after the award ceremony that his childhood experience out of school had played an important part in his works.

Besides the colorful experience of Mark Twain, the dual (双重的) character of him is also worth talking about, since the great master is famous for his humor and criticism. People may regard him as the same sort of person, with humor or sometimes with a bit of sarcasm (嘲讽). However, we may well understand it if we reflect the overview of his family — only three of his brothers and sisters survived tragedies (灾难), which would leave an unforgettable impression on Mark Twain.

(1)What do we know about Mark Twain from the passage? (1)
A . He liked his masterpiece The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. B . He was considered a mirror of America. C . He began writing when he was very young. D . He wrote books about his personal life.
(2)In Paragraph. 3, Mo Yan is mentioned because the author maybe wanted to stress __________. (2)
A . the value of the Nobel Prize B . his high reputation in literature C . the significance of early experiences D . his inspiring speech in the ceremony
(3)What can be learned from the Para. 4? (3)
A . Mark Twain's works are worth praising. B . Family is a heavy burden for Mark Twain. C . Mark Twain's character affects his writing. D . Brothers and sisters highly respect Mark Twain.

For all my life, everyone knew me as being a mother's girl. All the time, my mother and I were inseparable, we went everywhere together. People would talk about how I looked just like her because we're alike in many ways. My mother made me feel safe whenever I turned to her for help. I didn't know that soon in my life when I turned 16 that the bond I had with my mother would all change forever.

It was the beginning of a weekend in May 2011, and it was just another day for me. Saturday had finally arrived after a long busy school week. I planned to hang out with my friends for the day. The day went on just like any other normal Saturdays for me. My mother's action was presented normally throughout the day. We got up and ate two bowls of cereal (麦片)

My boyfriend was living next door. So I spent the whole day with him, watching movies and playing games. And that Saturday went by fast as I always thought it did. Around 11:30 pm, I got a text from my mom. So I looked down at my phone and it read, "Alyssa, time to come home." Instead, the message I received was the beginning of our relationship in the stage of catastrophe. When I was texting to my mother, I just got another new message from her, "Find somewhere else to stay tonight. I'll not be coming home. I am leaving now."

My mouth dropped with a stunned expression printed all over my face. My boyfriend stared at me waiting for an explanation for my reaction to the text. Paralyzed with fear, I sat there in uncontrolled shock and didn't know what to do or say. I handed my phone to my boyfriend. Having read the text, he was looking at me with the same shocked expression. I can't believe the text. I quickly grabbed my phone back to dial my mother as fast as I could. But there was no answer. I hung up and sat there thinking to myself, "Is this real?"

I insanely ran out of my boyfriend's house. As I approached the back door of my house, I observed that the lights were off and the door was locked. I quickly unlocked the door and barged in.

The noise was mute through the entire house. I was in alarm mode and I ran to my mother's room and turned on the light. It looked normal to me but I knew something went wrong. I opened the closet and drawers. To my surprise, many things were gone. I didn't even know if she was ok, and that killed me inside. The rest of the day went on with the same blue feelings running through my veins. I didn't eat or sleep because I just didn't feel like it.

Since that day my mother came back to the house, she did nothing but take a few things she owned. I saw her running off with some man with whom no one is acquainted. I never thought my mother would do anything like this, no one did. My mother took everyone for a surprise, but I honestly felt it had the most impact on me out of anyone else.

I learned that it was hard to have to take on an independent age of adulthood that a normal person would start to do when they were 18. However, I was only 16, with the limitation of the law, which made some things very difficult. To this day, I've never known why she left.

She missed out on my senior year, my school performances, and my scholarship, which truly made me disappointed. Though I am stronger now and I know I must rely on myself to reach the goals in my life.

(1)What was the life like after the mom left the author? (1)
A . The life was busy but happy. B . The life was ordinary and peaceful.  C . The life was poor and hopeless. D . The life was full of argument.
(2)What did the author do after she realized that her mother would probably never come back? (2)
A . She kept crying in his boyfriend's arms until the next morning. B . She quit the school and left the home, to find her mother back. C . She started a job and made a living herself. D . She barged in her mother's room and checked the closet and drawers.
(3)Which of the following word is the closest in meaning to the underlined word in Para.4? (3)
A . fooled B . discouraged C . received D . connected
(4)What do you think the author would do if she saw her mother again? (约40词回答)

Suddenly, old-fashioned road trips are in style again. Websites, newspapers, magazines and even        (book) are featuring road trips, even though they are actually        long-standing American tradition in pop culture, from the 1950s Beat Generation literary classic "On the Road" to the 1983 comedy movie "National Lampoon's Vacation".

In some ways, the comeback of this 20th-cetury-style vacation        (be) surprising in an age when "time has become far more        (value) than money", writes Richard Ratay in his coming book, "Don't Make Me Pull Over!: An Informal History of the Family Road Trip". In other words, why do you spend 18 hours driving 1,200 miles when you        (can) get there in two hours by plane?

Here is why: flying is expensive, and the more people taking the trip, the cheaper is to pile every one of your group in        car. Flying is also unpleasant. Getting to the airport, allowing time for security checks and dealing        delays and baggage can easily turn a two-hour flight into a trip that takes up most of your day and all of your soul. For some travelers, it is more appealing to get up early, hit the road and spend all day        (drive). At least you can bring more than one bag without        (pay) extra. And you can stop wherever you want and        (when) you want.
