The school day begins at 8:45. Class teachers meet the class and check who is present and absent at the beginning of the day. We have a school meeting once a week on Fridays. The head teacher speaks to the whole school. Morning lessons begin at 9:05. There are three one-hour lessons and a fifteen-minute break between every two lessons. The lunch break is from 1:00 pm to 1:45 pm. Afternoon lessons begin at 1:50 and the school day finishes at 4:00 pm.

    All students study and take exams in maths, science and English. In addition, they choose one subject from history, geography, art, Design and Technology, French and Spanish. All students take PHSE (Personal Health and Safety Education)lessons but no exams are offered.

    After school sports practice, matches are arranged on Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning. Chess, music, language and theatre clubs also arrange meetings after school. Students may join as many clubs as they like, but should join at least one.

    The school has a good record in sports. Last year we were champions (冠军)in football and tennis, and individual students won prizes for swimming and gymnastics.

Saturday, 14th October

    Yesterday Dr Hill put braces (牙箍) on my teeth. When she finished doing it, she walked me out to the front desk. She told Grandma I would have to come back in two weeks to have my braces checked. "Sounds like she put a washing machine in your mouth, doesn't it, Amy?" joked Grandma. Then Dr Hill gave me an appointment (预约) for 2:30 pm on 28th October. Oh, well, I guess getting out of school early to see Dr Hill will be one good thing about having braces.

    Other things aren't so good. When I woke up this morning, my mouth really hurt. I couldn't eat any bread or meat. Finally Mum mashed (捣烂) a banana and mixed it with some milk and honey, which tasted good.

    At school, my friends tried to be nice about my braces. Benny said he could hardly notice them unless I smiled. (Note to myself: Try not to smile too much.) Angel said they made me look more grown-up. And Keith thanked me for joining him. He said my braces looked nicer than his.

    Of course, Charlie had mean things to say. First he called me Brace Face, and then he called me Metal Mouth. I ignored (不理睬) him, but he kept laughing and pointing. He didn't stop until Mrs Fremont gave him one of her looks. Right now, Dr Hill's not sure how long I'll have to wear the braces. But it may be at least nine months. That seems like a long, long time.

    Young people are being invited to take part in a photography competition.

The Rotary Clubs (扶轮社) of Formby have organized the free event for young photographers who live in, or are at school in Formby.

    Children taking part must have been aged 16 or under. There is a senior section for children aged between 12 and 16 and a junior section for those who are 11 years old and under.

    Children taking part can submit (提交) up to three photos and there is no set theme. There are cash prizes for both the senior and junior sections, with $ 30 for the first place, $ 20 for the second and $15 for the third. A number of "commended" entries will also be awarded.

    The closing date is Friday, June 18, and all entries should be handed in at Formby Pool reception. Entry forms are available (可得到的)from Formby Pool, the library, Pritchards, or www.formby.rotary 1180.org.

    Ian Cover, president of the Rotary Clubs of Formby, said," There will be a display of the winners and other selected entries at Formby Pool between June 10 and 30.The prize presentation will be made at the pool during the Formby Live Weekend on July 17 and 18."

    Bath, 97 miles west of London, is the largest city in Somerset, England.  It became a World Heritage Site in 1987.

    The city got its name from the Roman Baths, which was a place for public bathing in Roman Britain. The water there is naturally heated under the ground. Today visitors are no longer allowed to enter the water. However, the exhibitions there will tell you the history of the Roman Baths. You can see many ancient Roman objects, including the coins that were thrown into the water to show respect to the goddess.

    Looking over the city, you will see many old buildings in the colour of honey. Among them, the Royal Crescent and the Circus are the most famous. The Royal Crescent is a row of 30 houses in the shape of crescent. The Circus is about 200 metres to the east of the Royal Crescent. It is a huge circle formed with large townhouses. It is divided into three parts of the same length by three entrances with a lawn in the centre. When visiting Bath, you can't miss these two sites.

    The museums in the city are also popular. You can go and appreciate western paintings. If you are interested in the English writer Jane Austen, you can go to Jane Austen Centre to know more about her life with her father in Bath, if you come in October, you can even take part in the bath film Festival.

    One Friday morning, a 50-year-old American officer came back to his school. The teacher asked him to give a talk to the little boys and        there. The American officer's talk was        the love of their great country. All the little      were sitting in a large meeting-room. The old officer went up and began speaking. He said, "Boys and girls, I studied in this school forty years ago. We were not      happy as you are today       I was your age. Think about it        answer me, can you tell me why you are so        now? "

    No sound came from the children. The old man waited       a long time. Then a short boy in the front put up his        dirty hand. "Good boy! Please answer me, dear." said the officer.

    With a big smile on        face, the boy stood up and said, "If you speak long enough, we won't have math and biology lessons this morning."

    Have you ever tried to write a poem(诗，诗歌)? It's easier than you might think. Just pick up a pen and begin practicing. Here are the steps to write a poem.

    Choose your topic.       Some people can start writing poems without really deciding what to write about; when their pen or pencil hits the paper, the words just flow (畅流). Most people, on the other hand, need a topic and as a beginner, this is the best way to start. It's easier to write a good poem about something you know well or you have experienced.

    Free write for five minutes about your topic. Then go back and read it. Are any words or expressions especially good?        For example, if you are describing something (a bird), write down descriptive words about it (looks, colors), and the kind of story you would like to tell about (the bird fell out of a tree). If you are writing about an event in your life, write down your feelings and thoughts of that event.

    Write your poem. Remember, a poem doesn't have to rhyme(押韵).       But it should show your feelings of the topic. And it should sound nice to you.

Have a friend read your poem aloud to you.

           If not, go back and rewrite the parts you don't like.

           Read it to others. Read it aloud to yourself. Put it somewhere if you want.

C. Enjoy your poem.

D. What would you like your poem to be about?

E. It doesn't have to use sentences, either.

F. It's very easy to write a poem.

G. Read your poems loudly when you are free.

    Shirley was a shy girl and she seldom answered questions in our class. She was afraid of making mistakes(犯错误). Sometimes she couldn't finish her homework because she didn't want to make any mistakes. ①Nothing changed until Mr Smith，a new teacher, came to our class.

One morning, Mr Smith asked Shirley to answer some questions. After a while, she was in tears because she gave the wrong answers. At that time, Mr Smith took out a small box.②盒子里装满了橡皮。" Look, Shirley," he said, standing next to her. "I have something to show you. "He took out the erasers and put them on the desk. "Look at these erasers, Shirley, he continued. "Do you know why they are become smaller and smaller. That's what you must learn—everybody makes mistakes, but they can be valuable experience and teach you something important.” Then he left one eraser on Shirley's desk.

    From then on, Shirley changed a lot. Instead of being shy, now she is active and confident. She isn't afraid of making mistakes any longer
