Today, we are going to talk about a child model. Her name is Li Hanghui and she is six years old. She has a gift for modeling and in July, 2019, she came third in a big modeling competition.
Li has modeling classes every Saturday. At first, her grandmother was against her taking the classes because she didn't want her granddaughter to become a model. Luckily, Li's mother persuaded(劝服) her grandmother by saying that the classes could make Li become more confident.
Li used to be afraid to take the subways because meeting too many people would make her feel uncomfortable. Her mother thought is necessary to take her out more to see the outside world, so she suggested Li take modeling classes. After taking the classes for more than a year, Li has made great progress. She isn't shy anymore and she dares to speak with strangers.
When asked if Li will be allowed to work as a Taobao model, Li's mother said, "If she has a chance to be a Taobao model in her spare time, I will support her if she wants. However, if it gets in the way of her schoolwork, I won't encourage it."
If you don't quite fit in among the morning people or night owls(猫头鹰), well, you might soon have your own sleep type. Now, researchers add two more types; the afternoon people and the nappers(睡午觉的人).
A group of researchers in Belgium did a short online survey to over 1,300 people, aged 12 to 90, asking them questions about their sleep habits and tiredness levels throughout the day. They found that there were 631 people who fit into one of the two well-known night and morning types. Morning people are wide awake in the morning and sleepier as the day progresses. Owls are just the opposite.
But they also found, based on the wakefulness-sleepiness answers, that there were 550 people that fell into one of two other groups, the nappers and the afternoon people.
Of all the types, afternoon people wake up the sleepiest and then they become active around 11 a.m., staying that way until about 5 p.m., after which they get tired again. The "nappers" wake up active and stay active until about 11 a.m., after which they get really tired until about 3 p.m. After 3 p.m. until about 10 p.m., they are active again.
It is also found that the results, for the most part, held true in men and women, in both day-and-night shift workers and in all ages. There were some small differences in age, such as older people are more likely to fall more into the "nappers" group.
Now what type do you belong to?
Traditional clothing plays an important role in any country's history and culture. In China, when it comes to traditional clothing, Hanfu, Qipao and the Chinese tunic suit(中山装) are the most popular. However, most Chinese people are unclear about them. Here is some information about these three kinds of clothing.
Traditional Hanfu
Hanfu was created for Han people in the beginning. It shows the Chinese belief(信念). Its color, its style and even the length all relate to Chinese culture.
Hanfu first appeared in the Shang Dynasty, over 3,000 years ago. It was popular for a long time in Chinese history from the Qin Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty. At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, however, it lost its popularity. In recent years, with growing calls for reviving(复兴) traditional Chinese culture, many Chinese people have taken a liking to hanfu.
Qipao
Qipao, also known as the Cheongsam(旗袍), appeared in the 1920s and remained as the "national elothing" until the 1950s. At first, people made it wide and loose( 宽松的),covering most parts of the body. Yet it was not beautiful and people wanted a more beautiful kind of clothing. So in the 1930s, people made the traditional Qipao tight(紧的) to show the beauty of a woman's body. Now, lots of women still like to wear it.
The Chinese tunic suit
It is also called the "Sun Yat-sen suit", because it was named after Sun Yat-sen, a famous person in chinese history. It looked simple but good, so it quickly because popular among Chinese men in the mld-20th century. Although other kinds of clothing have replaced it, leaders of China still wear it when going to important events.
Have you ever wondered why some people live long, but others don't? Many scientists have studied the mysteries of a long life for years.
Thousands of studies support the idea that a long life is influenced by two major things.
Genetics(遗传) is a major influence. Some people's bodies simply have special advantages. They have parents and grandparents who lived long lives. Their parents have passed on these positive genes to them. Howard Friedman is a health scientist. He wrote a book about living a long life. He says genetics explains about 1/3 of why people live to an old age.
The other major influence is basic health care. Good food, clean water and medical care all help a lot.
However, recently, scientists have found the way a person thinks about life can influence how long that person lives!
Many studies show that having a sense of purpose is important. For example, in Okinawa, Japan, plenty of people are over the age of 100. They have an idea called ikigai or life purpose. Scientists believe it's one of the reasons why Okinawa has so many long-lived people.
Staying active is the second important personal quality. It's not the same as doing difficult exercise. Instead, it's the most important to remain active in a natural way, doing something you enjoy.
Another quality is helping people. Feeling loved makes people feel good. However, loving and caring for others makes people live longer.
The final one is conscientiousness(尽责). Conscientious people are responsible. They plan for things and think about details. Some people believe being conscientious means living a boring life. However, the opposite is true.
People cannot change their genes. And it's difficult to improve a whole community's health care system. However, the new research results show there are things each of us can do to help improve how long we live.
a. being active b. feeling loved
c. being conscientious d. giving others a hand having their life purpose
