This is always a busy time of year, but please don't forget to recycle as much as you can.
Put in Your Recycling Bins: Cardboard — this includes all the boxes your presents came in but please remove any plastic packaging. Plastic bottles — all plastic bottles including fizzy drinks and cider bottles, as well as milk, shampoo, cleaning and washing-up liquid bottles. |
Christmas trees can be recycled in your fortnightly Garden Waste Collection Service as long as they are small trees chopped into pieces no bigger than 3 inches or 75mm in diameter. For large trees please take them to your local Household Waste and Recycling Centers. Please note the Garden Waste Collection Service is suspended (暂停的) between Dec 26th and Jan 6th . |
Glass bottles and jars — empty wine bottles can be taken to the bottle bank together with beer bottles and pickle (泡菜) jars. Clothes and shoes — for your old clothes, take them to your local clothing recycling bank. |
Please Do NOT Place in Your Recycling Bins: Gift wrap — Christmas gift wrapping does not contain much paper. It is often layered with foil (箔纸) and plastic which can't be recycled. Plastic carrier bags — please do not put your recyclables in these as it makes it difficult to sort the contents. Plastic packaging — Although plastic packaging may have symbols which suggest it can be recycled, it is made of different types of plastic and there are no cost-effective ways to recycle it at present. |
It was "Disabilities Day at the Capitol " and I was there, along with hundreds of Georgians, hoping to get the attention of our legislators (立法者). My thoughts ran back to the days when I was struggling to deal with my hearing loss learning, often dependent on others to help me hear. Now I stood under the gold dome of the Georgia Capitol, a member of the disabled community claiming the rights of people with disabilities.
After the rally (集会) I followed the crowd across the street to a free lunch. Although the crowd was huge, I managed to find a place to sit. I introduced myself to the young woman on my right, Kendall. However, with my hearing loss and her serious speech disorder, a conversation with her was next to impossible.
After a few moments, I realized that Kendall's personal attendant (护工) was not present. I asked if anyone knew where she was and found out there had been a family situation and the attendant had to leave. "But," I said, "who's going to feed Kendall?" My thoughts were racing: someone had to help Kendall. In admitting her need I had to at once declare my responsibility to help.
Surprisingly, Kendall spoke clearly with her eyes. It was those eyes that spoke to me that day as we were waiting for lunch. I asked if I might serve her lunch. She nodded "Yes!" and her eyes said "Thank you!"
Helping Kendall that day shows an important belief of my life: We need each other. With or without a disability, it is our need for each other that makes us have a good life.
One of India's longest and strongest heat waves in decades, with temperatures reaching 123°F (51° C) has killed at least 36 lives since it began in May, and the government has warned that the suffering might continue as the arrival of monsoon (季风) rains has been delayed.
India's heat waves have grown particularly strong in the past decade, killing thousands of people and affecting an increasing number of states. This year, the extreme temperatures have struck large parts of northern and central India.
Anup Kumar Srivastava, an expert at India's National Disaster Management Authority, said the number of Indian states hit by heat waves was expected to grow to 23 this year from 9 in 2015. He said, "This year, the number of heat wave days has also increased — and it's not just day temperatures, night temperatures have also been high." He added that the coming storms would bring down temperatures in some areas, but that heat waves might pick up again until the monsoon rains arrive.
India's Meteorological Department warns that extreme heat brings a very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages. Medical authorities have canceled leaves for doctors at hospitals in Churu as the number of patients has soared. Schools in central India have remained closed.
In the capital, New Delhi, temperatures reached a record 118.4°F (45℃) on Monday, June 10. Clouds on Tuesday promised rain, but largely failed to deliver. Dust storms the next day lowered temperatures to around 100 °F (38℃).
Heat records around the world are more likely to be broken as average temperatures climb upward because of rising greenhouse gas emissions.
The days of dragging heavy luggage through an airport may be over thanks to a new robotic suitcase that follows its owner like a loyal dog.
Called Cowa Robot, the $650 carry-on suitcase moves on its own at a top speed of nearly 4.5mph and can find its way back to its owner within a distance of 164 feet.
To activate (启动) it, all the user has to do is press a hidden button in the handle and start walking — it will automatically keep up thanks to high-tech sensors in the case and a tracker bracelet (手环) worn by the traveler. High-tech sensors in the case and a bracelet make the Cowa Robot stays around 2 feet behind its owner.
Designed by a Shanghai-based startup, Cowa Robot was built with the latest in robotics to avoid objects in its path and actively look for its owner if it gets separated. The carry-on case has a built-in camera sensor to find its owner and it connects to a smartphone app via Bluetooth.
It follows at a 45-degree radius and can be programmed to follow a specific path, and it has a handle so it can be dragged when the airport is too crowded. The 10lb suitcase has four USB ports and a built-in battery that can charge a passenger's mobile phone or tablet, and has a separate section for laptops or other devices. It is made from a sturdy German Bayer PC material to protect its contents and has a logo that lights up.
