One Halloween a little boy and his friend went out for a fun night of trick- or- treating. At first everything was great.

    They were getting lots of candy as they went from house to house, but then they saw a house which they hadn't been to before. It was a very spooky (阴森森的) house. Being young and brave, they decided to go up to the door and knock. After all, scary houses might have the best candy!

    As they walked up the long winding path, they saw things that frightened (使恐惧) them to the bone! They heard sounds that frightened them. Maybe they should turn back. But the little boys, being very brave, just wanted to see what was in that house, so they went on, not deterred by the things they heard or saw. As they slowly made their way up to the door, they imagined what might be inside. Maybe it would be a witch or maybe a ghost!

    After knocking several times, the door slowly creaked (嘎吱作响) open. To their surprise, a monster (怪物) slowly came out to greet them. They were so scared that they couldn't move! What could they do? Then the little boy had an idea. He said, "Trick or treat!" Then the big scary monster, much to the kids' surprise, reached over and brought out a huge bowl of the best candy they had never seen. Wow, the kids thought, this was great! It turned out that the house was decorated for Halloween, and the big scary monster was just wearing a costume, just like the kids. Since they were the only kids, and were brave enough to go to the scary house, they could take as much candy as they wanted.

    There is little rain in desert. Because deserts are so dry, they have no "quilt" to help stop the soil from going away. As a result, they may get very hot during the day with the sun shining, but don't hold the heat overnight. Many deserts can quickly get cold once the sun goes down. Some deserts can reach temperatures of over 100 degrees F during the day and then drop below freezing (32 degrees F) during the night.

    The largest hot and dry desert in the world is the Sahara Desert in Northern Africa. The Sahara is a sandy desert with great sand hills. It covers over 3 million square miles of Africa. Other large deserts include the Arabian Desert in the Middle East, the Gobi Desert in Northern China and Mongolia, and Kalahari Desert in Africa.

    Animals that live in the desert are also used to needing little water. Many get all the water they need from the food they eat. Other animals keep water that they can use later. The camel stores up fat in its hump while other animals keep something they need in their tails.

    Only certain types of plants can live in the terrible environment of the desert. You won't see a lot of tall trees in the desert. Most plants have a way to keep water in their leaves or trunks, so they can live a long time without water. Now deserts cover around 20% of the world's land, but they are growing. This is called desertification and is caused by different reasons including human activities. The Sahara Desert is growing larger and larger each year. What should we do with it?

    Ten years ago I used to be very fit (健康的). I rode a bike to work and I got a lot of exercise at weekends. I used to play tennis a lot and go for long walks. In those days I didn't earn very much. I had a job in an office. It wasn't a very good job but I had a lot of time to do the things I enjoyed doing.

    Then, about eight years ago, I got a much better job. The pay was better, but the hours were a lot longer. I bought a car and drove to work every day. I began to take people out to lunch. And I began to put on weight, too. I stopped playing tennis and going for long walks at weekends because I just didn't have any time for things like that any more.

    There's a lot of stress (压力) in my job. Perhaps that's why I started drinking more than I used to. For example, I used to have only half a glass of whisky when I got home, but then I started filling my glass to the top, and instead of having one glass, I would have several. I started smoking a lot, too. I never used to smoke at all.

    Two months ago I had a heart attack. At first I just couldn't believe it. Luckily it wasn't very serious. The doctor advised me to stop smoking and to eat less. He also advised me to work less and get more exercise. But I just haven't any time! My job takes everything out of me!

    Sometimes I wonder if I should get another job. Perhaps I could do something like I used to do. But if I do that, I won't earn as much. I have a family to support. I have to think of them, too. I just don't know what I should do. What do you think?

    The relationship between parents and teachers is important in the development of a child. The good communication between them is communication that says, "I care about my child, and I value school." The best way a parent can show how much he or she values learning is by sending a prepared child to school every day.  Once a child gets behind in class, catching up can be difficult.

    Parents and teachers are partners in student development. A school community is built on relationships established (建立) among children, teachers, and children's families.

    Here are tips for creating a positive relationship with your child's teacher.

    Meet with your child's teacher in the fall.  —his or her special needs, outside activities, health, and home study habits.

    Look for the positive.  Share with your child's teacher something you particularly appreciated regarding the teacher something you particularly appreciated regarding the teacher's role in the academic and /or social development of your child.

    Let the teacher know that you want to support the work that is being done in class. Ask for suggestions for expanding school activities into home activities.

     You can send a note of thanks when something special takes place in the classroom and your child is involved.

Be willing to participate in or set up a conference when you or your child's teacher feels a special meeting is needed, such as:

    Your child seems to be deeply upset about something that happened at school.

A. When a child is absent from school, important lessons may be missed.

B. Phone your child's teacher if necessary.

C. The teachers need to feel appreciated for the job they do.

D. This is a good time for the teacher to learn more about your child.

E. Express your appreciation to the teacher.

F. The beginning of every term is very important.

G. There is an obvious drop in your child's grades.

    Have you ever been sad because of failure? Please remember, for often, achieving what you set out to do is not the most important thing.

    There was a rich couple who was throwing a big new year party at their house. So they went shopping at the market where everything was of high cost and had a fixed price. They wanted to maintain their high living standard so they didn't mind paying a lot for it. After purchasing everything they needed, they called a porter to carry everything and drop it off at their home. The porter who came was of an old age, not very healthy looking. His clothes were tom and he looked as if he wasn't even able to meet his daily needs.

    They asked the porter about the charges for delivering their goods at their home. The old porter quoted just $20, a price well below the market rate for delivering goods at the couple's home in his cart. Yet, the couple argued and bargained with the porter and finally settled for $ 15. The porter was struggling to make money for every single meal so he needed anything he could earn.

    The couple was very happy thinking how well they had bargained with the poor porter and paid him $ 15 in advance and left after giving the porter their address for delivery. They reached their home and one hour passed, two hours passed, but the porter still hadn't delivered their stuff.

    The wife started to get angry at her husband, "I always tell you not to trust such a person but you never listen to me. Such a person is not even able to earn enough money to feed himself for one time in a day, and you handed him everything we purchased for our big party. I am sure instead of delivering it at our home, he must have disappeared with everything. We must immediately go back to the market to inquire and then go to the police station to file a complaint against him."

    They both left towards the market. On their way, near the market, they saw another porter. They stopped him to inquire about the old porter and noticed that he was carrying their stuff in his cart!
