    It is well said that strength and courage aren't always measured (衡量) by medals and victories. They are also measured by the struggles we experience. The strongest people aren't always the people who win but the people who don't give up when they lose.

    It's been said that Andrew Jackson's boyhood friends just couldn't understand how he became a famous general and then the President of the United States. They knew of others who had greater talent but who never succeeded. One of Jackson's friends said, "Jim Brown was not only smarter, but he could throw Andrew three times out of four in a wrestling match. But look where Andrew is now."

    Another friend answered, "How did there happen to be a fourth time? Don't they usually say three times and out?"

    "Sure, they were supposed to, but not Andrew. He would never admit (承认) he was beaten—he would never stay 'thrown'. Jim Brown would get tired, and on the fourth try Andrew would throw him and be the winner."

    Andrew Jackson just wouldn't stay "thrown"! And that determination served him well for many years.

    Life will knock us off our feet again and again. But some people just won't stay "thrown". They get up again, dust themselves off and go for it one more time. These are people of courage. They are also people of faith and hope. Maybe you have been knocked off your feet. Will you stay "thrown" or will you rise and give it your best one more time?

    5G stands for the fifth generation, meaning the next step in the progress of technology to take the place of the present 4G system. 4G took the place of 3G, which came after 2G, and so on. These systems are wireless (无线的) computer networks.

    Earlier "G" systems were to improve mobile communication operations. Each new technology brought major improvements in speed and greatly increased the network ability. The new 5G system promises more of the same. However, technology experts say there is a major way that 5G is different from the earlier networks. It will move well beyond mobile network technology to influence more industries than other "G" systems.

    Wireless industry groups say 5G will help build future "smart cities" by connecting sensor (传感器) networks. Such networks will be able to control traffic and quickly find out streetlight problems. 5G is also expected to connect self-driving cars. Higher 5G speeds could also allow doctors to commonly perform long-distance operations. Factories and businesses could use 5G technology to improve the collection of information.

    However, there are some safety concerns with 5G. More data (数据) —and many more kinds of data—will be traveling across 5G networks. Much of the data could include private information about people, businesses or government organizations. The increased data flow would give Internet attackers (袭击者) a lot more possibilities to steal and misuse data.

    In addition, the wider use of a 5G wireless network means any breakdown of the network would have more serious results. Such difficulties could influence public safety as well as world business activity. Government network failures could create national safety risks. A failure during a doctor's long-distance operation could lead to the death of a patient. Or a network breakdown could cause terrible accidents of self-driving cars.

    Betty Schrampfer Azar is a world-famous expert on teaching English grammar. Here are some of her opinions.

    Why do students need to learn grammar? When teachers are deciding which grammar points to teach, they should first ask two questions. First, will understanding the point help students be understood and will it help them understand better? Next, will learning the grammar point help students be acceptable as English speakers?

    People usually think that grammar is all about memorizing rules. In fact, grammar is not just learning rules. It is a way to help students along the way to communication. Teachers should know that students do not all learn in the same way. Each may have a different learning style when it comes to learning grammar. Some may see a pattern and understand the rule. Others need explanations and more practice. "But to teach grammar as subject matter and test it as though you were testing the memorization of dates in history is sure to bore everybody and not to reach the goals that you are trying to reach—successful communication experiences," she says.

    Why do some teachers hate teaching grammar? Many teachers are not comfortable teaching grammar because they do not know how to answer their students' questions. "Most native speakers of English don't learn it in school," she says. "If you don't know any grammar of your own language and then you are asked to teach it, it's possible that your students may know more grammar than you and you can't answer their questions."

    Can teaching grammar really be fun? Teachers should learn to make the teaching of grammar fun. She says, "My students enjoy learning grammar as much as I enjoy teaching it. I think grammar is fascinating. It holds language together. It is really beautiful when you get to know it. Grammar is quite a remarkable (非凡的) thing."

How To Keep Peace With Roommates

    Keeping peace with your roommates will not always be a walk in the park.  Here are some steps you could follow to be at peace with your new roommates:

    ●  Whether you're moving into a new room or you're welcoming a roommate, it's good practice to set rules from the start. Let your roommates know your plan so they know when quiet time should be observed, and decide on how you'll share costs on food and so on. When everyone is on the same page in the beginning, it's easier to get along later on.

    ● Mind your basic manners and get to know your roommates more. Respect for each other and communication can make sure of peace of the room. Basic manners include knocking, saying "excuse me" when needed, being quiet and lowering the light levels when the roommate is sleeping. Organize an open discussion about your roommate's personality. Know his likes and dislikes. Have the necessary information in case of emergencies.

    ● Solve conflicts (矛盾) in a calm manner. Good communication is the key here. It is best to keep the conflicts only in the room when they happen.  These are the times when your maturity (成熟) will be tested.

     Roommates may be your lifelong friends.  This will surely make your new room a home away from home.

    It was a hot day in Bangkok. I was walking out of the busy Grand Palace. Some Thai teens were 1 and started asking me questions. Noticing that I was 2, they were interested and wanted to know more.

    "Oh, so lonely!" they said to me when they learned I was, indeed, 3 by myself for the long journey. I just smiled. They didn't know I've hardly been alone.

    I'm surprised by how much more 4 I've become. Instead of putting my 5 down and taking no notice of the person who may be 6 me on the sidewalk, now I smile and say hello. The only bad thing is the fleeting (短暂的) nature of the relationship one builds on the 7. I've felt sad more than a couple of times over 8 a fellow traveler. But there are always 9 friends and possibilities just in the next town.

    Part of the 10 of taking this trip was the knowledge that I'd be doing this alone. At first, I tried to get friends to 11 with me for the journey. If I was really going to do this, it would have to be alone.

    So don't fear traveling alone. It's the best thing.

    Ren Yi began teaching Chinese in the US city of Denver over 20 years ago. But she never thought she would become a popular author of Chinese textbooks.

    Ren graduated from Tsinghua University,  top Chinese university. She started to write a book for  (beginner) with the encouragement of her students.     "More than 200 students have been studying Chinese in our school in the last two or three years,  we never expected before. Most of them love traditional Chinese culture like lion dance, Peking opera  so on," says Xiao Teng, principal of Ames Chinese Language Academy in the US state of Iowa.

    Many Chinese students have studied English for nearly ten years, but most of them cannot even speak English correctly or fluently. In my opinion, there are several obstacles (障碍) that have caused this to happen. The main obstacle is fear! Another is the habit of translating everything from Chinese into English and then changing these thoughts into spoken words and sentences. Many of these difficulties are caused by the way Chinese people study and learn the language.

    We must learn to speak as a child does. When we are learning a second language we need to remember how we learned our native language. Learning to understand and speak a language is one of the first skills a child develops. How does a child learn the language? He listens for a time and then he tries to repeat the words. Parents give great praise for the smallest effort and the slightest improvement. Therefore, the child develops courage and is excited about learning. It takes a long time before he knows something about grammar, spelling or formal sentence structures.

    As for language teachers, they should avoid criticism (批评) and be very encouraging and generous with praise. Criticism or pointing out mistakes too often causes students to lose self-confidence and develop a fear of speaking. The best way to encourage a student is using praise.

    The most important way of speaking is having good self-esteem (自尊). Self-esteem is how you feel about yourself. When most Chinese people are asked how their English is, or they are told their English is very good, they immediately answer by saying, "Oh, my English is very poor." If you say this to yourself often enough, you will believe it. When someone praises you, just say "thank you".
