The regular editor of the agricultural paper was going off for a holiday, and I took his place.
It was an easy job since I've been in the editorial business for fourteen years. I worked all week with untiring pleasure and waited a day to see whether my effort was going to attract any notice. As I went to the office in the morning, a group of men stood outside, watching me with interest, and I heard one or two of them say, "That's him!" I was naturally pleased.
After a while, one of the men entered my office and asked me, "Are you the new editor?"
I said I was.
"Have you ever edited an agricultural paper before?"
"No." I said, "This is my first try."
"I'd like to read you this: "Turnips (大头菜) should never be pulled; it injures them. It is much better to send a boy up and let him shake the tree. "
"Now, what do you think of that?"
"I think it is good. Every year millions and millions of turnips are damaged by being pulled. If they had sent a boy up to shake the tree"
"Shake your grandmother! Turnips don't grow on trees!"
"Oh, they don't? Well, who said they did? The language was intended to be figurative (比喻的)."
Then this old gentleman tore his paper into pieces, and went out.
Pretty soon after this, the editor came in, looking sad and confused.
He said, "What put it into your head that you could edit a paper of this nature? You talk of the moulting (换羽毛) season for cows; and you say that clams (蛤蜊) will lie quiet if music were played to them.
Nonsense! Clams always lie quiet and they care nothing whatever about music. Ah, heavens and earth, friend! Why didn't you tell me you didn't know anything about agriculture?"
The victims were carried in one by one, their paws burned and fur charred, suffering from heavy loss of water and fear. Their caretakers bandaged their wounds and laid them in baskets with the only thing that was familiar-the leaves of eucalyptus trees (桉树).
As destructive fires have burned more than 2 million acres in Australia, dozens of koalas have been rescued from burning trees and ashen ground. "They are terrified. "said Cheyne Flanagan, clinical director of the Koala Hospital in Port Macquarie. The only one in the world, koalas, unlike kangaroos, birds or snakes, do not flee from fires but instead climb trees to the top, where they can roll themselves up into a ball for protection and wait for the danger to pass. But during the destructive fires, such as those that have burned in recent weeks, the animals are far less likely to survive. Even if the fire itself does not reach the tree top, the animals may overheat and fall to the ground, where they can be burned to death.
While koalas have evolved (进化) to exist alongside wildfires, the animals are facing new threats not just from climate change but also from human development, which will impair their ability to survive fires.
"We have these unique animals not found anywhere else on this planet, and we're killing them, Flanagan said, "This is a big wake-up call."
The Notre Dame (巴黎圣母院) fire has been put out, but its spire and a large portion of its wooden roof have been damaged. The terrible destruction causes a sudden sharp pain to people around the world. "What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonder anymore."
But the good news is that there is at least one way of seeing them, namely through a video game called Assassin's Creed: Unity. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like what they are in reality, and see Notre Dame as it was before the fire. Further, with virtual (虚拟的) reality technology, which is already quite mature, one can even look around the undamaged Notre Dame as if it is still there. Maybe digital (数字的) technology could help to better protect architectural cultural heritage.
The idea of making digital models of ancient buildings to save their data dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to advance since then. By scanning the ancient buildings with lasers (激光), building 3D models with multiple images, as well as measuring everything precisely, engineers can make a copy as accurate as the real one.
As computers and smartphones are hugely popular, the digital model has great useful value. First, itallows tourists to feel the cultural relics without touching them. The virtual tour of Dunhuang Grottoes in Gansu Province is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them. Furthermore, it can make the digitized cultural relics more famous by spreading awareness about them via the Internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Great Wall became very popular at the Hannover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting the site in the following years. Above all, it preserves all the information of the cultural relics. of course, however precise a model is, it is not the original. Maybe we will have better technologies in the future, but the digital technology offers a practical way to preserve architectural cultural heritage at the moment.

She got up early to be ready for the post. From the second floor flat she could see the postman when he came down the street, and the little boy, Johnnie, from ground floor brought up her letters on the rare occasions when anything came.
Today she was sure there would be something. Her daughter, Myra, wouldn't forget her birthday, even if Myra seldom wrote at other times. Of course, Myra was busy. The old lady was proud of Myra, who was Successful both in her company and family.
The old lady was eighty today. She had put on her best dress. Perhaps—perhaps Myra might come. After all, eighty was a special birthday.
Even If Myra did not come, she would send a present. The old lady was sure of that. Two spots of color brightened her cheeks. She was excited like a child. She would enjoy her day.
Mrs. Morison upstairs had brought a card and a bunch of flowers to her. Mrs. Grant downstairs had made a cake, and in the afternoon she was going down there to tea. Johnnie had brought up with a packet of sweets, and said he wouldn't go out to play until the post had come. "I guess you'll get lots of presents." he said.
What would she like? A pair of comfortable shoes perhaps. Or a new coat. A coat would be lovely.
