The word "barbecue" comes from the Caribbean word "barbacoa", which originally wasn't a way of cooking food, but the name of a wooden structure used by Taino Indians to smoke their food. It was recorded that the first barbecue as a diet consisted of some sort of fish, creatures from the sea obviously being plentiful in the Caribbean. Besides used for cooking, the structure of sticks could also be used as an area for sleeping, storage, and a shelter.

Spanish explorers took the word "barbacoa" back to Spain, where it appeared in print for the first time in 1526. At first, "barbacoa" still referred to the structure in which food was cooked, but later people started using it to refer to the process of cooking food in a barbacoa and the cooked food itself.

It was in A New Voyage Round the World written by William Dampier, published in 1697 that the word firstly appeared in print in English. It referred to the structure as a place for sleeping. By 1733, "barbecue began to mean asocial gathering when meat was grilled. About two decades later, in 1755, the word" barbecue" was entered into Samuel Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language.

Today, there are different spellings as well as meanings for" barbecue". Many people use" barbeque," BBQ", "Bar-B-Que, and other forms. The" official" spelling is generally considered to be "barbecue" with the letter" c, similar to the original. While people may debate over what should be the correct spelling or what exactly constitutes barbecue, there is one thing we all agree on: a barbecue is definitely no longer a shelter or a sleeping structure!

President George Washington himself was a big fan of barbecue. He wrote in his diary about going to a barbecue in 1769("Went in to Alexandria to a Barbecue and stayed all Night), and hosting one in 1773("a Barbicue of my own giving at Accatinck"). Barbecue competitions have been taking place since at least 1959. The first one seemed to have taken place in Hawaii, just a few months after it became a state, but was only for men. 25 men competed for the grand prize of $10.000.

Many dentists are worried about their patients consuming too many sugar-filled sodas, sweet drinks and non-nutritious snacks. These foods don, t have much nutritional value and they can take a toll on teeth.

What affect how quickly youngsters may develop tooth decay(蛀牙)are the eating habits and their food choices. With bacteria coming into contact with sugar in the mouth, acid( 酸)is produced. It will attack the teeth and eventually lead to tooth decay.

Foods containing sugar of any kind can lead to tooth decay. Almost all foods, even milk and vegetables, contain some type of sugar. Some of them, however, are a necessary part of a healthy diet due to their nutritional value. To help control the amount of sugar you consume, you need to read food labels carefully and choose foods and drinks with lower added sugar. Drinks, sweets and biscuits that contain a lot of added sugar shouldn't be on your shopping list.

Maintaining a diet lacking certain nutrients may increase the risk of tissue(4#A )infection in your mouth, which may result in a major cause of tooth loss in adults-the periodontal disease(2 a%P). Although poor nutrition and the periodontal disease are not directly related, many studies show that the disease progresses faster and can be more severe in people with nutrient-poor diets.

To make sure of enough nutrition, we need to maintain a balanced diet. Eating a variety of foods from each of the five major food groups and consuming less snacks will help a lot. If you do snack, choose nutritious foods, such as cheese, raw vegetables, plain yoghurt, or a piece of fruit.

(4)Where does this passage probably come from? (4)
A . A research paper. B . Cuisine website. C . A health magazine. D . A food blog.

1、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

Speaking of diet, most people think of strict restrictions(限制)on food. In fact, research shows that it is small, consistent(持续的))changes rather than a major diet that can contribute to lasting weight control. The following habits are some of the small changes that can help you lose weight in a healthy way.

    ⒈Eat Breakfast Every Day

Research shows when eating breakfast regularly, people are more successful at losing weight. If you haven't started eating breakfast, do it now. If you are already a breakfast eater, try increasing the variety of healthy food in your breakfast.

    ⒉Use Smaller Dish

Some studies show that we eat less with smaller tableware(餐具). The theory is that a full plate makes the food portions look bigger, which tricks people into thinking that they are eating more than they actually do. So next time you have your dinner, try having it on salad plates instead of larger dinner plates.

    ⒊Use Bigger Forks

But there is research showing that less eating can actually result from using a bigger fork and taking bigger bites. Because when seeing the food on the plates reduce quickly, people may stop eating sooner considering they've had enough.

    ⒋Display Produce(农产品) Proudly

Produce contains lots of nutrients and fewer calories. What's more, it's rich in fibre, which helps fill you up. Instead, bring the fruits and vegetables front and centre in your refrigerator and out in your kitchen.

A. This is one habit most of us can stick with for the long term.

B. Therefore, don't bury your apples or onions under other food.

C. Increasing the variety of healthy food may help people lose weight, according to some research.

D. The key is to make the changes sustainable (持续的) and easy to adopt in your daily life.

E. The result: we are satisfied with less food.

F. It might sound quite unreasonable.

G. Slice celery, peppers and other delicious produce, and pack them in bags for a quick and healthy treat.
