During my first day at senior high school, I met my new teacher. She looked at me and said, "I am happy to have an international student in my class." I was very excited.

    One day, I came to the class about three minutes late, and she told me to write my name on a piece of paper and, beside it, the word "late". In that way she could know I was late for the first time. At first, I was embarrassed and angry. Then I did not complain because she taught me an important lesson: time is very valuable(珍贵的).

    I learned another important lesson during one of my classes—the day of the first exam. After I finished my exam, I did not review my answers because it was the end of the exam time. One week later, she returned my exam paper. I found that one of my answers was wrong. Even though the only choices were A, B and C, I chose D instead of C. I tried to explain my mistake to her, "I marked D though I knew C was the right answer." However, she refused my request and told me, "I do believe you, but I am not going to forgive your mistake. This will encourage you to be more careful before you turn your papers in." I was not expecting that from her, but she was completely right.

    The United States is full of cars. There are still many families without cars, but some families have two or more. However, cars are used for more than pleasure. They are a necessary part of life.

    Cars are used for business. They are driven to offices and factories by workers who have no other ways to get to their jobs. When salesmen are sent to different parts of the city, they have to drive in order to carry their products. Farmers have to drive into the city in order to get supplies.

    Sometimes small children must be driven to school. In some cities school buses are used only when children live more than a mile away from the school. When the children are too young to walk too far, their mothers take turns driving them to school. One mother drives on Mondays taking her own children and the neighbors' as well. Another mother drives on Tuesdays, another on Wednesdays, and so on. This is called forming a car pool. Men also form car pools, with three or four men taking turns driving to the place where they all work.

    More car pools should be formed in order to have fewer cars on the road and use less gas. Too many cars are being driven. Something will have to be done about the use of cars.

    I was desperately nervous about becoming car-free. But eight months ago our car was hit by a passing vehicle and it was destroyed. "No problem, "I thought. "We'll buy another. "But the insurance payout didn't even begin to cover the costs of buying a new car—I worked out that, with the loan(贷款) we'd need plus petrol, insurance, parking permits and tax, we would make a payment as much as ￡600 a month.

    And that's when I had my fancy idea. Why not just give up having a car at all? I live in London. We have a railway station behind our house, a tube station 10 minutes' walk away, and a bus stop at the end of the street. A new car club had just opened in our area, and one of its shiny little red Peugeots was parked nearby. If any family in Britain could live without a car, I reasoned, then surely we were that family.

    But my new car-free idea, sadly, wasn't shared by my family. My teenage daughters were horrified. What would their friends think about our family being "too poor to afford a car"? (I wasn't that bothered by what they thought, and I suggested the girls should take the same approach. )

    My friends, too, were astonished at our plan. What would happen if someone got seriously ill overnight and needed to go to hospital?(an ambulance)How would the children get to and from their many events?(buses and trains)People smiled as though this was another of my mad ideas, before saying they were sure I'd soon realize that a car was a necessity.

    Eight months on, I wonder whether we'll ever own a car again. The idea that you "have to" own a car, especially if you live in a city, is all in the mind. I live—and many other citizens do too—in a place that has never been better served by public transport, and yet car ownership has never been higher. We worry about rising car costs, but we'd be better off asking something much more basic: do I really need a car? Certainly the answer is no, and I'm a lot richer because I dared to ask the question.

    I was 15. It looked like she was over 70. But on that day, I think she understood me more than anyone else.

    Walking into the church that Sunday was hard. I had never let anyone see me cry. But I knew I would cry that day. My grandfather was suddenly ill. The doctors said he might not live much longer. Everyone in my family was crying. Grandpa was the sweetest man in the world. Why was he leaving us?

    There weren't many people at church that day. One of them was an old lady sitting at the end of my row. She was smiling. I closed my eyes and prayed for my grandfather to get better. Soon, my eyes were full of tears. I opened my eyes and saw a hand in front of me. It was giving me a tissue(纸巾).

    The old lady was sitting next to me, smiling. She didon't say a word. She just gave me a tissue and a smile. I tried to thank her, but only tears came out. Then she took my hand. I looked into her eyes. They were clear and blue, and they made me feel peaceful. Her smile said to me: I am with you. Everything will be OK. I closed my eyes again. When I opened them, she wasn't there. I left the church but still couldn't find her. I never saw her again.

    My grandfather died the next week. We all cried a lot. But when I thought of that old lady's warm smile, I felt a little better.

    How did she know how I was feeling? I wish I could see her again, to say "Thank you."

    When the Home Office says that it's worrying about bars(酒吧)that encourage people to drink when they're already drunk, it means that the problem of drinking is about people falling over in city centers.  However, the latter is a more difficult issue. 

    There are plenty of drunken people who are a bit unsteady going upstairs to bed and don't break anything. The biggest change in their drinking habits is the increase in the drinking of wine, most of which is drunk at home. This is what will stop us becoming a 24-hour pub society.  The British are good at staying at home—most people now have informal dining kitchens, which encourage informal eating and drinking.  It doesn't sound unreasonable, but the Department of Health would say that it adds up to a health problem. Yet this has become the cultural standard for all generations. The great rise in alcohol consumption(消费)from the 1980s is considered to be down to women drinking, partly reflecting their increasing importance as wage earners.

    There is a strong connection between the economy and alcohol consumption in Britain. Today, the number of people who say that they don't drink in this country is rising, probably because of incentives offered by insurance companies.
