One of the best-loved American writers was William Sydney Porter, or O. Henry. From 1893 he lived with his family in a house in Austin, Texas, which is now a museum. Visitors to Austin can see the house. It was saved from destruction (破坏) and turned into a museum in 1934. The museum is a good way to learn about the interesting life of the American writer.
William Porter rented this house in Austin and lived there with his wife Athol and daughter Margaret for about two years. Many objects in the museum came from the Porters. Others did not. An important piece in the room is the original photo over here. It was taken there in the house about 1895. The piano there dates back to the 1860s. His wife took lessons on it when she first moved to Austin.
Porter wasn't a successful writer in the beginning. He worked on a farm, in a land office and bank. He also loved words and writing. The museum has a special proof (证明) of Porter's love of language—his dictionary. It is said that he had read every word in that dictionary.
Later William Porter was forced to leave Austin because he was charged (指控) with wrongdoing at the bank and lost his job. Because he was afraid of a trial (审判), he left the country secretly. But he returned because his wife was dying. After her death, he faced the trial and served three and a half years in a prison in Ohio.
William Porter would keep his time in prison a secret. But there was one good thing about it. It provided him with time to write. By the time he was freed, he had published 14 stories and became well-known as O. Henry. Porter later moved to New York City and found great success there. He published over 180 stories in the last eight years of his life.
A telescope, called Gaia, is being designed by astronomers in Europe, and it couldn't be more different from PanSTARRS, which is another telescope being designed. While PanSTARRS will be looking for asteroids (小行星) and comets headed for Earth, Gaia will be looking at our entire galaxy (银河系).
Gaia is designed to draw a map of the Milky Way, our home galaxy. Just as a map of your town gives you a picture of where things are located, Gaia's map of the galaxy will tell astronomers where the stars are. Over five years, Gaia will observe (观察) about a billion stars and other objects in our galaxy. Each object will be observed about 70 times.
Gaia will be sent into space connected to a rocket. It contains two telescopes, each focused at a different angle (角度). These two telescopes act like Gaia's "eyes". The reason why humans can see things in 3D is that we have two eyes focused on the same object, at slightly different angles. By using two telescopes like eyes, Gaia can produce the first 3D map of the positions of the stars it views.
Gaia, which is to be sent into space in 2011, will be a powerful telescope. If you were to use it on Earth, for example, you could stand 600 miles away from your best friends and still get a clear picture of their hair.
Gaia is one of more than a dozen telescopes being designed by scientists right now. The_next_generation_of_telescopes_will_reveal_new_parts_of_our_universe_that_will_seem_surprising. The universe, with all its planets, stars and other strange objects, is a puzzle with pieces that we can see by using powerful telescopes.

If you're a firsttime language learner, you know that emotional(情感的) ups and downs are a normal situation. When you understand a concept or begin to comprehend the language, you may experience feelings of excitement. However, those are often followed by moments of disappointment and discouragement, during which you might feel as if you will never master the concepts and attain the ability to understand and communicate effectively. .
Learn vocabulary effectively
Vocabulary is the most important part of communication. The more words you know, the more you can say and understand. The absolute best way to learn vocabulary is through the use of flash cards that you make by yourself. Purchase a set of 3×5 index cards(索引卡片) and cut them in half. . As you learn more information about each word, e. g. plural forms of nouns and principle parts of verbs, you can add these to the cards.
Research shows that language students learn more effectively and acquire more when they study frequently for shorter periods of time than if they study infrequently for extended periods of time. . This means doing a few homework exercises each day rather than doing all homework exercises the night before they are due.
Practice language actively
. Say vocabulary words out loud, read passages in the text aloud, do pronunciation activities orally and not just mentally. Write out the answers to activities rather than gliding through them in your mind. Read aloud entire sentences in an activity rather than just reading a fillin response. Transferring
language from your mind to your mouth is a skill that requires a great deal of practice.

Christine closed the door to Anna's room. Inside, her classmate and friend had fallen asleep. Downstairs, Christine's mom, Donna, was grasping Anna's mother Sheila around the shoulders. "We should go, "she said. "Get some rest, huh?"Sheila nodded, blew her nose, and then waved them goodbye.
On the car ride home, Christine worked up the courage to ask the question on her mind, "Mom?Why was Sheila weeping?"She thought she knew the answer, of course:Anna's cancer. In the past, Anna had been the neighborhood dogooder, always going door to door for various causes the local animal shelter, suffering children in Africa, or the families who'd lost their homes to fire. Now Anna could barely feed or dress herself. Christine thought it so unfair when bad things like this happened to good people.
"Well, it's complex, but I guess you're old enough to understand."
"Understand what?"
"Understand that Anna is sick, yes, but Anna actually gets a lot of help. The government helps pay for a lot of her medicine. She gets meals delivered to her by a nonprofit. She even gets massages from local volunteers. "
"Wow!"
"Her life's still very hard, of course, and no one would trade places with her, but when you have cancer, everyone can see that you need help, "continued Donna. "They don't always see that the people around you are suffering. "
"People like Sheila?"
"Yes, did you know that Sheila took a break from her job to stay home with Anna?"
"No!"Christine was surprised. She had never thought about who took Anna to her appointments, or fed her when she was too weak to lift a spoon. Of course it was her family .
"Yes. So that means that many of the things they used to do with that extra money are all out the window now. They're even worried now about keeping the house. "
"Their house? So Anna might have to move, while she's sick?"
"If she doesn't get better soon, and the bills keep piling up. . . "Donna pulled into the driveway, and just in time. Her cheeks were shining with tears.
