一、阅读理解(共4小题)
The meaning of the word "volunteer" may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means "one who offers his or her services ".There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage(垃圾)from beaches and parks. Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves. Volunteers don't expect any kind of pay.
At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people. Tracy, a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresa's homes in Calcutta(加尔各答).The following is her story.
"I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school .We watched a video about her work in India and all over the world. I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school, I too wanted to try her kind of work. So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks."
"I was asked to work in a home for sick people. I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch .I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up .I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them. To be honest, I don't think I was helping very much .It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world."
One girl decided to study judo(柔道) although she had lost her left arm in a car accident.
The girl began lessons with an old Japanese judo instructor. The girl was doing well. But she couldn't understand why, after three months of training, the instructor had taught her only one move.
"Instructor, "the girl finally said, "shouldn't I be learning more moves?"
"This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you'll ever need to know, "the instructor replied.
Not quite understanding, but believing in her teacher, the girl kept training.
Several months later, the instructor took the girl to her first toumament. To her surprise, the girl easily won her first two matches. The third match proved to he more difficult, but after some time, her opponent became impatient and charged .The girl skillfully used her one move to win the match. Still amazed by her success, the girl was now in the final.
This time, her opponent was bigger, stronger and more experienced. For a while, the girl appeared to be overmatched .Concerned that the girl might get hurt, the referee called a timeout .She was about to stop the match when the instructor intervened(干预).
"No," the instructor insisted, "Let her continue."
Soon after the match restarted, her opponent made a serious mistake; she dropped her guard. Instantly, the girl used her move to pin her opponent. The girl won the match and the tournament. She was the champion.
On the way home, the girl and her teacher reviewed every move in every match. Then the girl gathered the courage to ask what was really in her mind.
"Instructor, how did I win the tournament with only one move?"
"You won for two reasons," the teacher answered. "First, you've almost mastered one of the most difficult moves in all of judo .Second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grab your left arm."
The girl's biggest weakness had become her biggest strength.
There is no doubt that watching television and movies can influence the way people behave. Moreover, it seems that people are spending more and more time watching some sort of entertainment, whether it is a television, a video tape or a DVD. Therefore, the effects of the visual media cannot be ignored.
One obvious effect of these media is that watching them persuades people to buy certain products. Television advertising is widespread nowadays, and even movie theaters permit advertisements. Another way TV or movies affect people is that they give people either a broader view of the world or a distorted(歪曲)one, depending on what type of program they watch. Those who watch news and educational programs can learn many new things while those who watch entertainment shows may come to believe that most people in the world have great wealth and good looks. It may make them dissatisfied with their own lives. Finally perhaps the most easily influenced viewers are children, who may be unable to tell fact from fiction and may try to copy acts that they see on TV or in the movies.
With the ever-increasing popularity of video entertainment, society must pay attention to these effects. Television and movies, while entertaining and informative, cannot take the place of experiences.
Do you have any stress in your daily life and do you know how to reduce your stress?
Our world is changing with ever increasing speed and many people are finding it difficult to keep up with it. Although no one can control the world at large, people do have the power to control their personal world by controlling stress and their responses (反应) to it.
Of course a certain amount of stress, both physical and mental is normal and healthy for humans but too much can be fatal. According to a report on the Mayo Clinic's website, "80% of patient visits to their doctors are stress related. Almost 60% of all employee absences from work are related to stress. Over one million people (in the U. S. ) die each year due to diseases related to stress. This includes obesity(肥胖), lung cancer (due to smoking), heart disease and high blood pressure. "
The result of stress or the way it shows in a person's life is, in part, their reaction to the situation. Some of the ways in which stress "shows up" are signals that need to be recognised, before more serious conditions develop. A few of these are: stomachaches, chest pain, anxiety, depression, low self-esteem (自尊) and impatience.
The good news is that these reactions can be changed naturally. By using positive suggestions a hypnotist (催眠治疗师) can help us make great changes. A deep, relaxing hypnotic rest is a very safe, pleasant and enjoyable process and stress reduction is a natural by-product.
If you would like to get the tools to reduce stress naturally, hypnotism can be very helpful. A professional hypnotist not only guides people through stress reducing exercises and offers suggestions for dealing with stress, but also teaches self hypnosis skills which can be used throughout life.
a. obesity b. high blood pressure c. stomach cancer
d. lung cancer e. heart disease

Kids' Health: Four Steps for Fighting Stress
Everybody gets stressed from time to time. Some ways of dealing with stress—like screaming or hitting someone—don't solve (解决) much. But other ways, like talking to someone you trust, can lead you to solving your problem or at least feeling better.
Try taking these four steps the next time you are stressed:
⑴Get support. When you need help, reach out to the people who care about you. Talk to a trusted adult, such as a parent or other relatives. They might have had similar problems, such as dealing with a test, or the death of a beloved pet.
⑵Don't take it out on yourself. Sometimes when kids are stressed and upset they take it out on themselves. Oh, dear, that's not a good idea. Remember that there are always people to help you. Don't take it out on yourself.
⑶Try to solve the problem. After you're calm and you have support from adults and friends, it's time to get down to business. Even if you can't solve it all, you can solve a piece of it.
⑷Be positive. Most stress is temporary(暂时的). Remember stress does go away, especially when you figure out the problem and start working on solving it.
These steps aren't magic, but they do work. And if you can stay positive as you make your way through a tough time, you'll help yourself feel better even faster.
A. Ask for a helping hand to get you through the tough situation.
B. Notice your friends' feelings and find a way to help them.
C. Different people feel stress in different ways.
D. Ah, it feels so good when the stress is gone.
E. You need to figure out what the problem is.
F. And don't forget about your friends.
G. Then, find a way to calm down.

Great changes have been taken place in the way people communicate each other. In the past people write letters to share informations and later they talked with each other on the telephone. Now more and more people use our own mobile phones to communicating. And instead writing on the paper, they email each other on the computer. As a result, people find that quicker and easier to communicate, and at the same time some people feel that they become poorer in writing. They worry about whether people can be as closely as before.
