When my brother and I were children, we spent a few weeks each summer in the countryside with our uncle. He was a geologist and loved to go on long walks to find stones to add to his collection at the university. More often than not, we followed him.
One day, we left early, and this time, our uncle gave us two backpacks. “ You can help me carry the samples(样本),” he explained.
Surely, why not? The whole day, we walked around the countryside, and every now and then, our uncle put stones in our bags. We were a bit surprised that sometimes he also took some stones out from our bags, but thought he had just found better samples.
We reached the house in the late afternoon. The backpacks were so heavy that we were really tired out when we put them on the ground. Yet our uncle's backpack was half-empty.
“Why did you give us so many stones?” we asked.
“I didn't. You did,” he said, waiting for a while before continuing. “ You did not know it, but I made you go through a little attitude(态度) test today.”
What do you mean an‘attitude test'?” we wanted to know.
“It is something someone once did to me. You see, I listened to every word you said. And whenever you complained(抱怨) about anyone or anything, I added a stone to your bags. And whenever you talked about something in an attitude of positive thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks.”
We did. They were full.
“I hope you remember this little attitude test. You see, your negative thoughts are like stones. You carry them in your mind just like those stones and start paying attention to what you say and how you say things.”
This little lesson was one of the most important lessons I ever had. And I remember my uncle with great love for teaching us one of the most important lessons in life – the power of attitude.
Everyone knows it is very easy to cook instant noodles by putting them into the boiling water and add in those MSG(味精) packets(小包), together with other food like eggs or vegetables. However, have you ever wondered whether this is the correct way of cooking them?
In order to make the noodles joined together nicely side by side it needs some form of wax coating (石蜡涂层) in order to show an attractive instant noodles in front of us.
However, researches have shown that the layer (层) of wax coating on the noodles is quite harmful to our body and we should not eat it too frequently. We should have a break of 2-3 days before we start to eat another packet of instant noodles as our body needs about 3 days to clear that layer of wax coating away from our body system. Do you know the danger of having too much wax coating stored in our stomach? It will lead to CANCER if it is stored in our body system for a long period of time.
There are 2 key points to take note while preparing instant noodles:
1) Wash the instant noodles with warm water first, stir(搅和) it and pour away the water containing the wax coating.
2) Repeat Step 1 and try to stir the noodles again to wash away the wax coating on the noodles before cooking it in a new pot of water. If you have eaten other types of noodles, you will notice that the store seller will wash the noodles in warm water first to keep the noodles from sticking together and for the case of instant noodles, the wax coating on the noodles is keeping the noodles from sticking together. It is very important to wash away the wax coating while preparing a meal as we don't want our body to be in danger.
Hope this article will let more people have self-awareness of the hidden danger of instant noodles and thus eat safely and stay healthy.
When an animal helps another animal,it usually gets something valuable in return. For a long time, many scientists thought that only people could act generously just because it feels good.
However,a new study in Germany suggests that chimpanzees (an animal like a large monkey without a tail ) also do good things for no real reason. And so do children who are as young as 18 months of age. Maybe it is because humans and chimpanzees share an ancestor about 6million years ago.
People and chimpanzees appear to develop such features without any other training, says Warneken,a scientist in Germany.
Warneken and his partners worked on adult chimpanzees that live on an island in the African country of Uganda. They also worked with 18-month-old children in Germany. The researchers performed three experiments on the adult chimpanzees and two experiments on the kids. In the first animal experiment,a person tried to reach his arm into a cage to get a stick, but he couldn't reach it. A chimpanzee was in the cage, and it could reach the stick if it wanted to.
Thirty-six chimpanzees took part in this experiment one by one,and no chimpanzee saw what the other chimpanzees had done. Even though the animals hadn't met the person before, they usually took the stick and gave it to the person. What's more, they did this whether or not the person offered them bananas as a reward.
In a similar experiment,36 children acted in a similar way. They helped the person reach the stick, whether or not they were offered toys for their help.
Researchers did other experiments on chimpanzees and babies. No rewards were offered in either experiment. And still, both the chimpanzees and children went out of their way to help. Still, the new study is different from earlier findings. Researchers have found that chimpanzees don't give rewards of food to other chimpanzees, even if it costs them nothing to be generous.
