For thousands of years, people have lived with dogs. Ancient paintings on the walls of caves show people living with dogs. Almost a third of the homes in the United States and England have dogs, and these dogs come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes,

    The largest dog in the world was a dog named Zorba. When Zorba, a mastiff, was seven years old in 1989, he was 94 centimeters (37inches) tall. In other words, Zorba was more than half as tall as an adult man. At his largest, Zorba weighed more than a heavy weight boxer at 156 kilometers (343 pounds).

    In comparison, the smallest dog was a Yorkshire terrier from England. This dog was only the size of a matchbox, measuring 7.1 centimeters (2.8 inches) tall and 9.5 centimeters (3.75 inches) from nose to tail. It weighed about as much as a common book, and even a young child could easily pick it up with one hand. It passed away in 1945 when it was only two years old.

    Some dogs are wonderful, not for their sizes, but for their brains. One incredible(难以置信的)dog is Parton who has used a wheelchair since a car accident in 1991.

    In 2001, Parton was hit by a car while crossing a road with Endal, and thrown out of his chair. Endal quickly moved Parton into the recovery place, covered him with a blanket(毯子), and pushed his mobile phone close enough for him to reach. Then, once he saw that Parton was all right, Endal ran back and forth to a nearby hotel, barking until people came out to help.

Endal was rewarded for his bravery by being awarded a medal, and he has been the subject of a number of TV documentaries.

    American schools are quite different from those in China. In America, at the beginning of the term, students muse their subjects and teachers first.

    Selecting is very important for your grades in America. So at the first term, don't select too many subjects, or you'll feel very nervous and it may influence your study. Then you have to ask for some teaching plans. There is some information about subjects, timetables, marks and textbooks. Different teachers have different teaching methods. If the teacher is called “killer” by the last grade, many students will give up choosing him. Because this kind of teacher will leave too much homework, too many exams and give too low grades.

    There is another thing after you select the subjects and the teacher. How to buy textbooks makes each student feel hard. The textbook in America are save money, many students buy some used textbooks, and some students usually borrow textbooks from the school library.

    In class, discussing is very important. The teacher encourages you to ask questions or show your opinions. They don't usually ask you to sit well. Instead they allow you to sit or stand everywhere you like.

        When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn't a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to hear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.   

    He listened to me quietly, and then he asked. “Are the things she says true or not? Janet, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like? Well, you now have that girl's opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said.”   

    I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number I could—and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I go to fairly clear picture of myself.  

    I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it.“That's just for you,” he said.“You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feeling hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be of help to you. Our world is full of people who think they know your duty. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do.”   

    Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice.   

Your body is special — no two people in the world are alike, although you are different from everyone else, you have exactly the same body parts as the people around you, doing different jobs that keep all of us alive.

    What is inside my head?

Your head houses the most valuable part of your body— your brain. As you are reading, your eyes send pictures to your brain which makes meaning from what you see. Your brain helps you to remember and think, and makes sure your body is doing what it should.

    Your skin covers your body. In most parts of your body, the skin is just as thick as half a centimeter. If you have your skin cut, it will have a quick cure and stop viruses from getting into your body. Your skin also helps you feel the heat and coldness of the environment around you. Hair grows from inside the skin. When you feel hot, extra heat comes out through your skin. As a result, your body temperature drops.

    How do I move?

Muscles(肌肉) are found in most parts of your body. They work with your bones to help you move— whenever you cry or smile, eat or speak, walk or dance, etc.

    Why do I breathe?

    Your body needs to take in oxygen(氧气) from the air and give out the unwanted carbon dioxide(二氧化碳) in the body. When you breathe, air comes through your nose and mouth into your lungs(肺) where oxygen dioxide in the body.

    What makes me sneeze( 打喷嚏)?

    When dust or strong smell gets into your nose, you sneeze. This is the way your body cleans up the dust in your nose. Your lungs push out the air and try to clear your nose.

    What does my heart do?

    Your heart is a very special muscle. It is a little bigger than your fist(拳头) and grows bigger as you do. If you place your hand on your heart, you will feel your heart beating which makes blood to move around your body.

    Brittany Amano wants to make sure every child in the US has enough to eat.

    Brittany Amano, now 18, knew       it felt to go hungry. Her mother tried to find a job in Honolulu, Hawaii to support the family. Her grandmother helped out       much as she could. But the family still had to depend on a local food bank      (live) on, and for that she was        (thank).
