Most people have jobs. They go to 1 nearly every day. Some people are lucky. Either they have very interesting jobs or they earn a lot of 2. Most people are not so lucky. Either their jobs are a bit 3 or they don't get well 4.

    The most interesting jobs are often the most 5. People spend long time learning how to do them. Doctors study for 6 six years after finishing school. Airline pilots(飞行员) study longer. They have to learn to fly small airy craft first, and then 7 move up to bigger and bigger aircraft. Most airline pilots are at least 30 years old.

    Some 8 people have interesting and well-paid jobs. Many successful athletes(运动员) are usually under 35. Older people usually can't 9 these sports very well because they can't move fast enough.

    Most people work until they are 60 or 65 year old. Some people 10 retire. These people usually have very interesting jobs. Writers, artists, musicians and actors usually work until they die.

    A farmer's cow was ill. he was worried and ask the vet to see it.

    "What's the problem?"the vet asked.

    "I don't know why my cow's lying down and won't stand up. She won't eat, and she's making a strange noise." the farmer said.

    The vet looked at the cow."She's certainly ill and needs to take some very strong medicine." He took a bottle out of his box and put two pills into his hand."Give her these,"he said,"The pills should make her better."

    "How should I give them to her?" the farmer asked.

    The vet gave him a long tube (管子)."Put this tube in her mouth," he said, "then put the pills in the tube and blow. That'll make it." Then the vet went away.

    The next day the vet came to the farm again. The farmer was sitting outside his house and looked more worried.

    "How's your cow?" the vet asked.

    "No change," the farmer said, "and I'm feeling very strange myself."

    "Why?"

    "I did what you said," The farmer answered. "I put the tube in the cow's mouth and then put two pills down it. But the cow blew first".

    Many blind people use guide dogs to help them get safety from place to place and to warn them of danger. But what can blind people do if they are allergic（过敏的）to dogs or just don't like them? For some people, the answer is provided by the Guide Horse Foundation.

    Janet and Don Burleson founded the organization in 1999. They began training miniature horses to help guide blind people. Miniature horses look just like regular horses, only much smaller. They are generally less than 34 inches tall.

    Cuddles was the foundation's first guide horse in full service（服务）. She became 45-year-old Dan Shaw's helper. Shaw has an eye disease and his sight is very poor. One night, while filling out a form to get a guide dog, Shaw heard a news story on TV about people training horses to guide the blind. Shaw loves horses and wanted a guide animal that would live a long time. He applied（申请）, and a year later, Cuddles and Shaw began training as a team.

    On a trip to New York, Cuddles helped Shaw safely tour Times Square, a very busy part of the city at night. The next day, Cuddles calmly rode the elevator with Shaw to the crowded top of the Empire State Building, a famous tall building. Cuddles even guided Shaw on the boat ride to the Statue of Liberty（自由女神像）, and traveled on the subway system.

Shaw says that he is very lucky to have Cuddles. He believes that Cuddles has changed his life for the better by giving him more freedom.

    Volunting is to lend a hand and make someone else's day a little easier. There are many organizations in your own company that would welcome your help. Volunteering can also lead to a playing job. Follow these steps to become a volunteer today.

1). Write a list of all your skills. You may have a job or a hobby that could help other people. Look at your list and decide on how you can use these skills to help a local organization.

2). Research agencies(服务机构) in your area and find out which needs volunteers. Often non-profit (非盈利的) organizations welcome volunteers for all kinds of tasks.

3). Ask friends if they know anyone who needs a volunteers for all kinds of tasks.

4). Talk to members of your community centre. You may be able to help another member of the organization.

5). Check with your local school. Many schools welcome volunteers. Volunteers help teachers prepare something during the teaching in the classroom.

6). Write a resume (简历) and letter. Resumes show what you have done and what you can do. The letters show your skills and desire (意愿) for being a volunteer. Use resumes and letters to show organizations that you are serious about volunteering.

7). Search the Internet for volunteer opportunities. Visit websites such as volunteer.ca and volunteering. com for information on being a volunteer.

    How to talk to someone you don't know? It depends on the situation(情形).

    If one of your friends introduce you to a new friend, it would be OK to start talking about the person who introduces you. You may ask him/ her how they knew each other. Show you are interested in it, even if you aren't. Nod after he/ she talks. This will give you more time to listen to what he/ she says, and think about next question from his/ her talking.

    Now if you go to a class on the first day where you do not know anyone, the first thing you should remember is not to be shy when talking to other people. You may remember when you were in the first or second grade, someone would just walk up to you and talk to you. Be open, but think before you talk.

    When it comes to meeting people face to face for the first time, find a situation which both of you are in. Maybe you are sitting next to each other. Maybe the other person says something you don't understand. Find a situation that seems proper (恰当的). Start with a simple conversation. It may seem strange at first. But the more you talk and take action with them, the more they will like you.
