This is a story about a mountaineer named Phillip. Phillip was a member of a mountaineering team that planned to climb a mountain. In order to enjoy the glory of being the first to reach the mountaintop, Phillip went to climb the mountain alone one night while the other mountaineers were sleeping.

Obviously, climbing at night wasn't a smart decision. But he still wanted to give it a try. He was nearly to the top when he suddenly slipped and started to fall. At that moment, his entire life flashed (闪现) before him .

His body was hanging in mid-air. While thinking about how close he was to death, he felt the rope around his waist (腰) suddenly tighten around him. He helplessly shouted, "Somebody helps me!" Suddenly, a low voice came from the valley, "Cut the rope!" "What?" He couldn't believe what he heard. "Cut the rope around your waist!" It was dark all around, so he couldn't see his surroundings. He refused to cut the rope, choosing to hold onto it as tightly as he could.

The next day, when his fellow mountaineers found him, they discovered that he had died of exposure (暴露) to the cold, holding tight to the rope in his hands. But he was only ten feet above a big rock! If he had cut the rope and allowed himself to fall, he might have been able to land in a safe place, build a fire and wait for someone to save him.

Stir-fry, Peking duck, fried rice – the tastes of Britain.

"Britain?!" I hear you cry. "But British people take afternoon tea with sandwiches! Those are Chinese dishes!"

According to a survey by Food Network UK, nine out of 10 British people said their favorite food was Asian. The number one international food in Britain was stir-fry, according to the Daily Mail, with 55 percent saying they ate it often.

Britain has a very multicultural history. Centuries of history brought dishes from across the world. Almost every town in the UK has a Chinese or Indian restaurant, and Italian, Thai and Jamaican are not unusual. Perhaps it's no surprise that they learned to cook and eat dishes from other countries. Traditional British food doesn't have a great reputation (名声).

International food has become British food – even when British are cooking. Another survey by the UKTV food channel in 2009 showed the most common dish British could cook without a recipe was Italian spaghetti bolognaise (意大利肉酱面).

However, if you're in the UK and think a trip to a Chinese restaurant would be a great way to stay away from homesickness, think again. Many British Chinese dishes aren't exactly Chinese. At the end of every British Chinese meal, you get a sweet crisp known as a "traditional Chinese fortune cookie". I have lived in Beijing for almost a year. I have yet to eat a fortune cookie that is really Chinese. A bowl of stir-fry followed by a fortune cookie… now that would be a way to cure my homesickness – for the UK.

(1)Which is British people's favorite international food, according to the survey? (1)
A . Stir-fry. B . Peking duck. C . Italian spaghetti. D . Indian food.
(2)What's the most important feature of modern British food? (2)
A . Unusual. B . International. C . Traditional. D . World-famous.
(3)What can we learn from the sixth paragraph?
(3)
A . Chinese people in the UK won't go to Chinese restaurants. B . Chinese food has great effect on British food. C . Chinese fortune cookies are famous in Beijing. D . British Chinese restaurants are different to Chinese restaurants in China.
(4)What's the best title for the story?
(4)
A . History of British food B . The reputation of British food C . International tastes of Britain D . The great British culture

Rob Frenette had problems with bullies (欺辱) at school for eleven years. He was often lonely and scared. When he was fifteen, however, he decided to do something about his problems.

He walked into a newspaper office and told them about the bullying. His story went into the newspaper and soon all the TV stations in Canada wanted to talk to him about his experiences. They also wanted to hear his ideas to stop bullying.

After that, Rob continued his studies at school, but in his free time he helped other people with bullying problems. With a friend Katie Neu, he made a website called www.bullyingcanada.ca.Visitors to the website can find advice, stories and poems about bullying, in both English and French. When people are upset, they can talk on the phone or online to Rob and his team. Every weekend Rob has to answer e-mails to the website. He also speaks to children, teachers and members of government around the country about bullying.

Rob's most important message is: "When bullies are unkind to you, it isn't your fault. There's nothing wrong with you, so you should try to keep trusting yourself. And remember that people care about your problems. You just have to find those people." One of Rob's ideas is "Blue Day", a special day for stopping bullying in schools. Students have to wear blue clothes and in class they learn how to stop bullying. More than 150 Canadian schools now celebrate Blue Day, but Rob won't stop until there's a Blue Day in every school in Canada.

You don't have to be a scientist to solve big environmental problems. One Dutch designer is finding creative ways to make a change – and he's inviting cyclists to join him.

Daan Roosegaarde, 38, is a designer from the Netherlands. He uses creative ideas to improve city life. For his Smog Free Project, he designed a portable tower that cleans air in Chinese parks.

In the Netherlands, he designed a glowing bicycle path.

Now Daan and his team are working with engineers at Chinese bike-sharing company Ofo to create a new product for public use. It's an air-cleaning machine attached (连接) to a bicycle and is part of the Smog Free Project.

In smoggy weather, the device would breathe in the air in front of the bike and blow out a stream of clean air toward the cyclist's face. So how does it work? Daan said the "smog-free bikes" would use the process of ionization (电离作用) to collect harmful particles in the air, such as PM 2.5.

"Take a balloon and polish it with your hand to produce static (静电) – it's the same principle (原理)," Daan told China Daily.

It's no secret that air pollution is a big problem for China. In winter, it's common for thick clouds of haze, caused largely by factory production, burning of coal and car emissions, to cover areas of China. In 2016, only one-fourth of Chinese cities met the country's air quality standards (标准), according to a survey of 338 cities nationwide from the Ministry of Environmental Protection.

"Of course one tower and a few bikes won't solve China's air pollution problem," Daan told The Guardian. "But smog-free bikes are an exciting idea that will hopefully activate communities toward creating greener cities."

(1)Which of the following describes Daan Roosgaarde correctly?
(1)
A . He is a scientist from the Netherlands. B . He is a designer who has cool ideas. C . He is a fan of cycling matches. D . He works in a Chinese bike-sharing company.
(2)The new product Daan created is a (n) _____. (2)
A . air-cleaning tower B . glowing bicycle path C . smog-free bike D . flying bicycle
(3)The device on this bike can _____. (3)
A . turn polluted air into clean air B . blow away harmful air C . help a bike to speed up D . keep cyclists warm in winter
(4)Why did Daan create such a device? (4)
A . Because he wanted to become famous in China. B . Because he wanted to make some money. C . Because he hoped to use his design for his own country. D . Because he hoped to help improve city life.
