Alicia was a young woman who liked to exercise for her health. She didn't smoke and never 1. She didn't eat chocolate, 2.

    One day, Alicia saw a man sitting in a rocking chair under a tree. He looked very old and his hair was white. He looked thin and weak, and his hands were shaking, 3 he looked very happy.

    He smiled at her and said, "Good morning! Lovely day, isn't it?"

    Alicia didn't expect the man to give her such an answer. She wondered how the man could live a long life when he did 9  wrong. She thought he should be 10 and sad. Maybe she was wrong.

    "How old are you?" She asked.

    "It's my birthday today," said the man. "I'm forty- seven!"

    Potatoes are very popular today. But in the past this was not true. Potatoes grew in South America 5,000 years ago. But they only became popular in other places 200 years ago.

    In the 16^{th cent}ury, the Spanish took the potato from South America to Europe. But European people didn't like this vegetable. They thought potatoes grew underground and would bring them bad luck if they ate them.

    In the 1800s, people started to eat potatoes. Potatoes became the main food in Ireland. Then something unlucky happened. In 1845, a disease(疾病) killed all the potatoes in Ireland. Two million people died because they didn't have enough potatoes to eat.

    Today each country has its potato dish. Germans eat potato salad, and the USA has the baked potato. Of course, the French have their French fries.

    Some people see a hobby as a waste of time. They think a hobby is only something to pass the time. In fact, a hobby is much more than that. Its advantages(优点)are as follows.

    People can have time for themselves.

    If one has a hobby, he or she can enjoy quiet time. People usually think more clearly when they enjoy their favorite hobbies. People often get some good ideas at that time.

    People can discover their talent.

    People often find new talent of themselves when they enjoy their hobbies. Some people find their talent for playing the piano only when they sit down and play. The only way to find this talent is to try. The first thing you should do is to find something that you are interested in.

    People can feel relaxed.

    Most hobbies are good ways to relax. Coming home from work and sitting down to enjoy things you like helps you relax. Hobbies also help you get a better sleep.

    These days, more and more young people wish to be more beautiful. So they turn to plastic surgery(整形手术) for help. They spend thousands of Yuan on these painful surgeries to fix(修整) their nose, to change their eyelids(眼皮)or to take off weight from their stomachs.

    In fact, most people are not pleased with the way they look. Even the most beautiful actresses often wish they could change something about their looks. Should we live our whole lives believing we are ugly? Why not raise our head high and believe that we are as beautiful as others? A smile is beautiful on any face, whether fat, oily or hairy. And a kind heart is much more beautiful than a pretty look.

    So, let's feel grateful(感激的) that we all have beautiful and healthy bodies that do not need surgeries! Today, I call on you to make an easy change: hold your head high! Smile and do something nice for others. If you do these, you will be full of confidence(自信)，beauty, and warmth everywhere you go.

    What do Napoleon, Clinton and Wang Nan have in common? They are all left-handed. Today, about 15% of the number of people is left- handed. But why are people left- handed? The answer is the way the brain(大脑)works. The brain has two halves--the right half controls the left side of the body, and the left controls the right side of the body. So right – handed people have a strong left –brain and left –handed people have a strong right – brain.

    The two halves of the brain are about the same size. But each side controls different things. The left side controls language, math and logical(逻辑的). When you remember new words, or when you put things in order, you use your left side. The right side of the brain controls your love of art, colors and music. It is also good at recognizing(识别) faces.

    This does not mean that all artists are left –handed and all accountants(会计)are right –handed. Some right –handers have a strong right – brain, and some left –handers have a strong left –brain.

    When I was in Grade Eight, I was not good at study. In fact, my teachers thought I was the        (差) student. My family also had the same idea        （与……一样） my teachers.
