A few months ago, I learned that the city food bank needed some volunteers. I used to be the 1 in my group of friends. So, I sent letters to 10 friends. I'd like to 2 a group that would volunteer to make and serve dinner for the disabled people. I wanted to 3 my friends to be part of the group. Almost all of my friends 4.
One day, several of my friends brought some food and helped prepare the 5 . " I got such a strong feeling of satisfaction when I saw the 6 people get the food!" said one friend. Later, another friend made a list (清单) about serving, 7 we could do quickly and easily. Now each month there are new faces that join the group. One woman 8 invited another group of her friends to serve. It's hard to imagine that simple 9 asking friends to help have made a great difference. At first, I just wanted to be an organizer. Now, I 10 my idea. I also love to work as a volunteer, because I can get more joy from the happy faces of the disabled people.

Computers are useful machines. They can help people a lot in their daily life. For example, they can help people to save much time to do much work, and they can help people to work out many problems they can't do easily. Our country asks everyone to learn to use computers before the twenty-first century, except the old people. Today more and more families own computers. Parents buy computers for their children. They hope computers can help them improve their studies in school. Yet, many of their children use computers to play games, to watch video or to sing that computers can not help children to study but make them fall behind. So computers are locked in boxes by parents. In some other countries, even some scientists also hate computers. They say computers let millions of people lose their jobs or bring them a lot of trouble. Will computers really bring trouble to people or can they bring people happiness? It will be decided by today's students themselves!

Every day some people are killed while they are crossing the roads. Most of these people are old people and children. Old people are often killed because they can't see or hear very well. Children are killed because they are not careful. They forget to look and listen before they cross the roads.
A car or a bus can't stop quickly. If a car is going very fast, it will travel a few metres before it stops. Some people don't always understand this. They think a car can stop in a few metres. It's difficult to know how fast a car is moving. The only way to cross the roads safely is to look both ways, right and left. Then if the roads are empty, you can cross them.
Sea turtles (海龟) are cute animals, but they are in danger of going extinct (灭绝的). That's mainly because many people kill them for food.
But this news may stop those people: Dr Nichols and other scientists have found that sea turtles take in a lot of pollution from the sea. It is bad for both sea turtles' and humans' health. Many people get sick and even die from eating sea turtle meat.
People in America don't usually have sea turtles on their dinner table. They think eating sea turtles is gross (令人恶心的). Also, all the seven kinds of sea turtles are protected by law. “But some people around the world still eat them,” explained Dr Nichols. “At first we wanted to save sea turtles; now we want to save people, too.”
Dr Nichols wants to send the information to people who still think sea turtle meat is good food. And he wants people to understand a bigger message: we should protect the sea. “The health of the sea, the health of the animals in the sea, and our own health all have close relationships. For a long time we didn't really realize it,” said Dr Nichols. “Now it's clear that a clean sea is really good for us because of the food we eat from there.”

六、任务型阅读(共1小题)
Reading books is a good hobby for all kinds of reasons. First, reading books is fun. You can always keep yourself happy if you like reading. This is especially useful when the weather is bad. It is a relaxing hobby, too. You can really become lost in a book.
Next, you can read a book almost anywhere: in a car, in a waiting room, on a plane, in bed — even in a bath. All you need is a book. Reading is a convenient(方便的) hobby as it is easy to stop and then start again.
Another good reason for reading books is that it is useful. If you keep reading as a hobby, you will get better and better at it. This means that you will read faster and will become better at understanding what you read. As your reading improves, you will find that your schoolwork becomes much easier.
Some people say that reading is out of date. This is not true. You have to be able to read on the Internet. And the better you read, the better your computer skills will be. Reading is hardly (几乎没有)out of date!
Good readers are most likely to be good writers, too. They are usually good at spelling as well, and have more things to write about.
Reading books is a wonderful hobby, one of the best. What other hobbies could be more useful or more enjoyable?
