At the beginning of this term, my 1 teacher suggested I take part in the marathon race(马拉松赛跑). I was very surprised(惊讶的) 2 I was never a good runner. He said that if I took part in it, I would get a 3mark(分数) for the term's PE class. So I decided to have a4because I had nothing to lose.

    I prepared for the marathon very 5. I ran every day in the morning6school. And after school, I practised7with many other runners on the sports ground.

    You are like a new baby. Babies learn their languages slowly. First they learn to listen. Then they learn to talk. Finally, they can read and write.

    Listen to English every day. Listen to English radio, watch English TV, go to see English movies or use online lessons.

    Practise the conversations. Make up conversations and practise the conversation. You'd better use beginner textbooks.

    Read English stories. Start with children's storybooks. Try to read stories for ESL readers. Read ads and so on. Try English Club for young learners.

    Write down new words. Start a new word notebook. Write words in alphabetical order (A…B…C). Make some sentences. Try to use an English-English dictionary.

    Keep an English diary. Start with one sentence. Like how do you feel? How is the weather? What did you do today? Write another sentence tomorrow.

    One day, the teacher held up an apple in class, stood on the platform(讲台) and said, "Please smell the smell in the air!" One student raised his hand and answered, "I have smelled it. It is the smell of an apple."

    The teacher stepped off the platform, passed by each of the students and said," Please smell again to see if the smell of the apple is still in the air."

    Half of the students raised their hands to show that they could smell it. The teacher returned to the front of the classroom and asked again if the students could smell the apple. Everyone raised their hands except one student. The teacher came to the student and asked," You really can't smell the apple?"

    The student answered," No, I can't smell it. I don't think it's a real apple."

    The teacher smiled at the student and said to the class," He is right! This is not a real apple."

    All of the other students were tricked. They might have thought that perhaps the apple was not real, but they didn't have the self-confidence to speak up. They just "followed the leader" and went along with the first student.

    Gardening is popular in many parts of the world. It brings us sweet smelling flowers, fresh fruit and vegetables. But you can get more from your garden.

    Gardening helps to keep healthy. Today's people sit indoors for too long and don't get much exercise. When you garden, you have to move around. It's a good chance for you to exercise your body by watering flowers or doing some digging. Besides, when you are in your garden, you can feel the warm sunshine. This means you are getting Vitamin D. It helps your bodies use calcium (钙), which is necessary to keep your bones (骨骼) strong.

            It gets them off computers, televisions and phones. Gardening can be a great teacher to teach children about nature and healthy eating. It can also help them to understand the meaning of "No pains, no gains."

    Gardening is a great way to meet people and build relationships. When you are gardening, you are outdoors. So it is a perfect time to communicate with your neighbors. Most people love to talk about their hobbies, and so do gardeners. They usually enjoy showing people what they are growing. And most enjoy sharing advice and stories about their gardens.

    Long ago in a small village, there was a place called the House of 1,000 Mirrors(镜子).A small, happy little dog learned about this place and decided to visit. When he arrived, he jumped happily up the stairs and to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway. His ears lifted up, and his tail wagged as fast as it could. To his great surprise, he found himself looking at 1,000 other happy little dogs with their tails wagging just as fast as his. He smiled a great smile and he found 1,000 great smiles that were just as warm and friendly. As he left the house, he thought to himself," This is a wonderful place. I will come back to visit often."

    In this same village, another little dog, who was not quite as happy as the other one, decided to visit the house. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung (垂下) his head low as he looked into the doorway. When he saw the 1,000 unfriendly-looking dogs looking back at him, he growled (吼叫) at them. He was afraid when he saw 1,000 little dogs barking back. As he left, he thought to himself," That is a terrible place. I will never go back there again."

    All the faces in the world are mirrors of you. What kind of reflections (反映) do you see in the faces of people you meet?
