    Next Saturday is the Volunteer Day of our community. Here is the plan.

    7: 30 a. m.: Meet at the Community Centre for breakfast.

    8: 00 a. m. —8: 30 a. m.: Decide which ofthe following organizations you'd like to work for. You can begin thinking about what you may want to do now.

    Happy Homes: It provides home repairs for people in need.

    Elder Care: It sends volunteers to old people's home. Volunteers can play games with the old people there, or talk with them.

    City Parks Association: It needs volunteers to help plant flowers and pick up trash (垃圾) in city parks. These are outdoor activities, so remember to bring some drinking water!

    Love and Learning: It helps children with learning disabilities. Read books out loudly to groups of children and help them with their homework.

    8: 30 a. m. —9: 00 a. m.: Get on the bus for your chosen activity, and ride with the other volunteers to your activity sites (地点).

    9: 00 a. m. —12: 10 p. m.: Work as a volunteer.

    12: 10 p. m. —1: 00 p. m.: Share lunch with yourvolunteer group.

    1: 00 p. m. —3: 30 p. m.: Go on with your volunteer work.

    3: 30 p. m.: Get on the bus that will take you back to the Community Centre. You can talk with other volunteers and share your experiences.

Central Community

    Bill Adams retired (退休). His daughter, a nurse, asked if he wanted to volunteer at her hospital. Bill didn't think he wanted to be aroufid 1 people, but his daughter said. "Just try it for a week and see how you feel."

    Thirteen years later, Bill is 2 volunteering at the hospital two days a week. He says, "Volunteering is a good thing to do, and helping others makes me 3. "Over the years, Bill has worked in many departments (科). Now he 4 in the waiting area outside the X-ray room.

    Once, a woman found out that she needed immediate surgery (立即手术), but her 5 were not with her. Bill helped call her family and took them to 6 so they could be together. Later, he 7 the woman again. It was great to see the woman get better. Bill got a lot of 8 from her family.

    Bill loves volunteering at the hospital, and he also likes 9 others to join the volunteer work. "All of the volunteers are like family. We're good friends. We love helping others when they are in need." he says. At the age of 81, Bill has no plan to 10 his volunteer work. He has decided to stay busy as long as possible.

    Katherine Commale is a 12-year-old girl from Pennsylvania. At the age of five, she learnt that        Africa malaria (疟疾) killed a child every 45 seconds. She also learnt that people wouldn't get malaria if they slept in a bed net (蚊帐). The cost of a bed net        (be) 10 dollars at that time.

    "It made me        (sad) to know about those poor children," Katherine says. "I wanted        (raise) money to buy bed nets for African Children." So she had a good idea.

    Five-year-old Katherine        (make) speeches at churches and schools. She showed people how important bed nets were for African families. After        (listen)to her speeches, many people donated (捐献) money. Katherine sent the money to Nothing But Nets. That organization sent bed nets to Africa.

    Besides, Katherine had        good idea soon. She decided to make gift certificates (礼券 )to sell for the Christmas holiday. On each 10-dollar certificate there was        message. It explained that a bed net would be sent to Africa. With the help of        (she) brother and friends, she got more and more certificate orders.

    Katherine has helped raise more than $200，000 for Nothing But Nets.

    "It makes me happy to help African children," says Katherine. "I won't stop        (work) until everyone in Africa has a bed net."
