More than one year ago, I suffered from a medical issue lasting for almost two months. I didn't share it with everyone because I thought it didn't sound so important, but as time has progressed, I've come to realize it was so much more than that.
On February 13, 2017, I was in my kitchen 1 dinner with my youngest son. 2 I felt a sharp pain in my head, and I was very dizzy, seeing 3. I could see the concern in my son's eyes as he asked me to rest on the sofa while he finished cooking dinner.
As I lay there, I acted as if I was OK but 4 it got worse. This headache along with other symptoms continued non-stop for the next seven weeks. 5 countless doctor and specialist appointments, and tons of medicines, the pain remained.
Both doctors and several radiologists were 6. I'm a believer of God and I always have been, 7 sadly I was losing hope and I felt as if my faith was being tested this time. The emotional suffering began to affect my spirit.
Thankfully I continued to pray and be grateful that I was fortunate to have medical care. So many people have no money for 8 and suffer daily. After 48 long days of 9 and going to bed with an extreme headache, my answer and healing finally came through a wonderful doctor and physical therapist.
To God goes the glory!
Looking 10 I feel so grateful for all the love everyone gave. I have so many considerate friends, caring coworkers, 11 a very loving and sweet husband and three amazing kids that show me every day how much I 12 to them.
My mind went to so many places during this uncertain time and I was reminded that life is so fragile. Nowadays as challenging as it may be, I'm trying to 13 each day as if it were my last, remaining 14 and happy. I'll continue to be thankful and give back whenever and as much as I can. I 15 you to do the same.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow…

In an attempt to make the group texting experience more bearable, we've put together a list of strategies and things to consider when messaging multiple people at the same time.
Think about who you're texting
Whether you're in a group text with your parents, schoolmates, or work friends, consider what you're sharing - and who you're sharing it with. Parents may not be interested in the latest memes and explaining their slight differences can be a pain.
Be mindful of people's schedules
While not everyone's schedules are the same, most people are busy during typical work week hours, so sending a million mid-day texts isn't always ideal. Some people rise early or get to bed early. Avoid including them on a text that you know will ask for a bunch of responses super late at night or early in the morning.
Name the group
If you have the ability to name the texting or messaging group you're on - this is possible on an iPhone or when using Facebook Messenger - I strongly recommend you do so. Though not everyone will love the name you choose, naming your group will help you keep track of all your ongoing conversations.
Don't write lots of one-word texts
Please, if you must text in the group thread, don't deliver multiple short answers in a row. Everyone will despise you. If you have something pressing to share or say, try to sum it up in one brief text. If you have a lot to say, maybe try writing an email.
Damn I seriously don't have time to be on my phone when I'm at work, and my friends keep texting on the group chat and I'm at a loss.

There are a couple different things that make ramen noodles an unhealthy choice. There's not much to these provision packets besides salt and carbohydrates. While those certainly get thrown around quite a bit as “bad-for-you” comments, you may not know how they actually harm your body. Firstly, there's the fact that most instant ramen servings contain over 1100 milligrams of sodium-that's approaching half of the maximum you should eat per day. When you take in that much sodium in a single sitting, your body overcompensates by holding more water. This can cause temporary water weight gain, leaving you feeling bloated(肿胀)and lacking in energy.
But while you may feel bloated, chances are you won't feel full. Since the ramen contains lots of refined carbohydrates with virtually no protein or fiber, it's essentially the very definition of empty calories. And you've probably heard the song-and-dance about refined carbs; eating too much can lead your blood sugar to increase and then decrease, leaving you hungry and ready to eat again-which leads to weight gain.
And, perhaps most upsetting of all, this quick-and-easy meal may stay with you much longer than you realize. Massachusetts General Hospital's Dr. Braden Kuo used a pill-sized camera to record the digestive tracts of volunteers who ate processed ramen noodles as well as fresh ones. With a video, Dr. Kuo was able to show that, after two hours when the fresh noodles were long gone, the ramen noodles were still there in the intestines.
Doctors do know that years of eating the instant packets are linked to poor health. Another study, this one by the Harvard School of Public Health, assessed the long-term consequences of ramen consumption in South Korea, where it's a major course. They found that subjects, women in particular, who ate instant noodles at least twice a week had a 68 percent higher risk of diabetes and heart disease-than subjects who ate a more consistently natural diet.
In short, eating ramen once in a while won't damage your health-as is true with most processed foods. But it's not something you should make a habit of-for your stomach and heart's sake.
Wolves travel shorter distances and move slower during snowfall events, according to new research by University of Alberta biologists. The effects were most pronounced at night, when wolves hunt, and behaviour returned to normal within a day. Wolf tracks across snow in northeastern Alberta.
"Our findings suggest that there is something about actively falling snow that causes wolves to slow down," said Amanda Droghini, a former MSc student in the Department of Biological Science and lead author on the study. "We don't know the exact mechanism behind that. It's unlikely that they were staying still because they were feasting on a recent kill. Instead, active precipitation(降雪量)might affect wolves' hunting abilities. Like rain, snow clears the air column of scent molecules. So, maybe falling snow makes it harder for wolves to detect the smell of prey."
Over the course of two winters, the researchers used remote cameras to disclose snowfall events and estimate snow depth. To study wolf movement, they collected telemetry(测距仪) data from 17 wolves to calculate travel speed and duration, as well as resting periods. It is the first study to examine how large flesh-eating animals respond to snowfall events.
With the effects of climate change on precipitation in the north forest region uncertain, it is difficult to predict the implications for wolf populations. Studies such as these increase our understanding of how large mammals react to normal snowfall events, but the type and amount of winter precipitation will likely have an impact on animal behavior and the energetic cost of movement.
"Winter is already challenging for many wildlife species because moving through snow requires more energy. Snow can also make it harder for animals to access food resources," said Droghini, who conducted the research under the supervision of Professor Stan Boutin, Alberta Biodiversity Conservation Chair.
"Anything that increases those costs, such as increased rain-on-snow events, could lead to lacking in nutrition, poor body condition, and even starvation as animals are unable to make up for those additional costs. That is one of the worst-case scenarios(设想)but, in truth, we know very little about potential changes to precipitation patterns and how wildlife will respond to those changes."
For over 70 years, UNICEF has been putting children first, working to protect their rights and provide the assistance and services they need to survive and develop all over the world.
It's the end-of-year giving season, and UNICEF has lots of good news to share about the influence its supporters have had on the lives of children. Thanks to its generous donors, UNICEF has helped save more lives than any other humanitarian organization.
Monthly donors are a major reason why UNICEF can make that claim, according to Karla Coello, UNICEF USA Senior Director for Monthly Giving. “Last year, UNICEF responded to 377 humanitarian emergencies, from conflicts to natural disasters,” says Coello. “Emergency appeals bring in important revenue - but after the emergency, there are still a lot of things children need to make life bearable. That's what our monthly donors provide.”
When drought destroys crops, conflict forces families from their homes, an epidemic breaks out or a disaster strikes, children suffer most. And in some countries, even the best of times are dangerous for its youngest citizens. Every day more than 15,000 children under 5 die from preventable causes.
Protecting children before, during and after a crisis requires a reliable source of funding. The constant stream of revenue provided by monthly donations enables UNICEF to reach children with what they need most when they need it, prepositioning emergency supplies before a disaster strikes and continuing to build sustainable solutions after an immediate crisis has subsided.
Monthly giving is also important to funding large-scale interventions(介入). Thanks to UNICEF's global immune campaigns, the world is now nearly free of polio(小儿麻痹症)and there are only 14 countries where mothers and children still face maternal and neonatal tetanus(破伤风)deadly threat. And UNICEF programs in 120 countries are helping to prevent and treat malnutrition, which is linked to nearly half of all deaths of children under 5.
“UNICEF USA monthly donors are our most engaged, most dedicated supporters,” says Rebecca Volpe, UNICEF USA Manager, Monthly Giving. “So we do our best to make them feel appreciated by keeping them thoroughly updated about the powerful impact they are having and showing them how much they matter to us.” In turn, monthly donors tend to be dedicated supporters. “Protecting children - giving them opportunities to play, learn, feel safer, heal - is critical to us,” explained a survey respondent, expressing a commitment to children that UNICEF USA's Monthly Giving team sees every day.
Supporters who sign up with UNICEF USA to give monthly automatically become members of the Guardian Circle, which affords them benefits, including:
Annual statements to make tax time easier
An easy-to-use donor access that simplifies modifying gift amounts, updating payment methods and making other changes, including the timing of donations with the option to cancel at any point
Targeted communications in the form of monthly statements and a quarterly 8-page newsletter with stories from the field.
A team available to answer questions via email or phone.
“We have some donors who are on fixed income, others who can afford to make considerable monthly donations," says Coello. “Whether you give $5 or $700 a month, you are super important to us. What's important is that they all really want to give and help children. And that's amazing.”
It can be time-consuming and difficult to track charitable donations. At end of year, Guardian Circle monthly supporters receive one statement that makes filing tax returns easier - and it's always delightful to see how much good has been done for the world's most vulnerable(受伤害的)children.

Taping and bracing ankles
Ankle sprains(踝关节扭伤) are the most common sports-related injuries in the United States. If there was an easy way of decreasing the number and severity of these injuries, that would be great. For this very reason, the practice of taping and bracing ankles was introduced decades ago.
How, then, do taped or braced ankles decrease the incidence and severity of sprains in athletes? One explanation for how it works comes from a study which found that taped athletes had improved proprioception(本体感受), which is the body's ability to know how fast the ankle and foot are moving and if they are starting to roll over or not. When they were compared, the athletes with taped ankles had better proprioception both before and after exercise compared with athletes using no tape. The tape's traction(拉力)or pressure on the skin of the foot and ankle helped improve sensitivity and proprioception, resulting in fewer ankle sprains.
Another common concern often expressed by the public is that lengthened practice of taping or bracing ankles results in weak ankles that then tend to get injured more easily; this would be a strong case against taping or bracing ankles. However, a scientific study looked at the effects of consistent ankle brace use on the peroneus longus muscle. It is an important stabilizer(稳定装置)of the ankle, particularly against inversion, the most common type of ankle injury. This study showed that the peroneus longus muscle's ability to do its job was not changed by the long-term wearing of an ankle brace.
Many studies have been completed to compare taping ankles and bracing ankles to try to determine which one is better. Most have shown that braces are slightly more effective than tape, but that both are better than no support at all. One study found that simply wearing high-top sneakers instead of low-tops prevented some ankle injuries and that high-tops plus tape had more than 50% fewer injuries than low-tops plus tape.
So whether it's on the field or on the court, the tape or brace is an important piece of athletic equipment just like your helmet or mouth guard.

八、书面表达(共1小题)
The term “herd behavior” comes from the behavior of animals in herds, particularly when they are in danger situation. All of the animals unite in a group and, in panic mode, move together as a unit.
The term also applies to human behaviour, and it usually describes large numbers of people acting the same way at the same time. When herd behaviour sets in, an individual person's judgement and opinion-forming process shut down as he or she automatically follows the group's behavior. For example, suppose that a family is walking down the street looking for a restaurant to have dinner. If they pass a restaurant that is empty and one that is relatively crowded with customers, they are far more likely to choose the crowded one.
