There once lived a rich businessman who had a lazy son. The businessman wanted his son to realize the value of labor.
One day, he told his son, "Today, I want you to earn something. If you fail, you won't have your meal tonight."
The boy didn't want to find a job, so he asked his mother for help. She gave him a gold coin. In the evening, when the father asked his son what he had earned, the son showed him the gold coin. The father then asked him to throw it into the well (水井). The son did as he was told.
The father guessed that the gold was from the boy's mother. The next day, he sent his wife to her parents' home and asked his son to earn something. Since no one helped him, the son had to go to the market to look for a job. A shopkeeper told him that he would pay him a coin if he carried heavy tools for him. The son accepted. As he returned home and gave the coin to his father, he was asked to throw it into the well. The boy cried, "Dad! My body is aching. I'm tired. How are you asking me to throw my hard-carned coin into a well?"
The businessman smiled. He told his son that one feels pain only when the fruits of labor are wasted. The son realized the value of hard work. He promised not to be lazy any more.
People read books less often in these days. With the invention of radio, television and most recently, the Internet and computer games, it seems that reading books is no longer a popular activity. However, I believe that books are an important part of our lives.
Books offer an outstanding wealth of learning and at a cheaper price than taking a course. Books can make people cleverer, because heavy readers have greater knowledge of how things work and who or what people were.
Everything in today's society requires reading. Imagine trying to do something as simple as reading the directions on a medicine bottle without good reading skills. Someone could not understand them and become very sick or even die.
Even something as simple as walking or driving through the city could become very dangerous without enough reading. Sometimes, you must be able to understand what is written and explain the meaning of them.
Some people say that reading is a waste of time and we can do better things with our time. Even if we don't read books, we still read every day, and reading books can strengthen (加强) our abilities. Reading is one of the greatest things we can do in our spare time.
With a book, you can travel anywhere you want, do anything you want, and talk to anyone you want. Reading is very important in our lives, no matter your age. So I think people should read books.
A. Each part has a different meaning. B. So they cannot create as many numbers as we can. C. That's because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. D. Also, mobile phone numbers can be recycled. E. The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. |
Have you ever counted the number of digits (数字) in your mobile phone number? Your number has 11 digits. You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number. Why is that?
The 11 digits can be divided into three parts. The first three numbers tell you which mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for the China Mobile Communication Corporation and 188 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you which area the number is recorded in. And the last four digits are random (随机的).
We once had 10 numbers. But as our population grew, there were not enough numbers for us to use. So we began to use 11 digits starting from 1999.
Eleven digits can be used to make tens of billions of mobile phone numbers, according to the Xinhua News Agency. That's enough for each person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China. Usually, the service provider will reuse a canceled number after three to six months. If you call a number that you haven't contacted (联络) for a long time, you may find that its owner has changed.
Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit mobile phone numbers. But their numbers always start with. Countries like the United States, Australia and India use phone numbers with 10 digits. Canada's mobile phone numbers are perhaps the world's shortest: they use seven digits.

A Cloud of Hope and Danger
In 2050, a small cloud floats through the air in a hospital operating room (手术室). In the room a patient, suffering from cancer, lies on a table. The cloud surrounds (包围) the patient, her body and filling her lungs (肺). The cloud is not smoke or steam. It is made of millions of microscopic robots nano-robots (纳米机器人). These tiny robots move from cell (细胞) to cell in the patients' body, destroying the cancer cells.
Fighting cancer with nano-robots is only an idea today, scientists say that it would be possible in the future. Using nano-robots for good purposes such as fighting disease or repairing the environment may be the to many of today's problems.
However, nano-robots could be a risk as well. Since nano-robots are so tiny, they will have to work in large teams of many thousands to 'many millions. this reason, nano robots will have to be programmed to build . Scientists will not have the ability to build millions of nano-robots one by one.
This ability to reproduce (复制) is making some scientists worried. What if something goes wrong in the programming? Quite a lot of crazy nan-orobots would be far than any disease. Some people think that if they get out of control, nan-orobots could destroy the Earth.
What should be done? Should we continue nan-orobots or should we search for other methods? This is one of the many difficult that we have to make in the future.
