Research suggests that at least 64% of people now spend up to four hours daily of spare time in front of a screen. Just as a TV watching has been linked to higher chances of being fat and getting all kinds of diseases, this extra sedentary time is bad news for our health.
Choose outdoor activities over technology
When you're at home, make it a rule that you can't be online if the sun is shining. Instead, you have to go for a walk, swim or get some other kind of healthy physical activity for at least an hour before you can pull out your phone or take a seat at the computer. This rule should be fit for everyone in your family.
Limit social media use
Social networks have changed computer and mobile use for people of all ages. Whether it's a Facebook or Twitter, limit the amount of time you spend on social media. Avoid aimless browsing and give your time online a purpose: Research holidays or catch up on the news of the day. Then log off.
Save time for reading
Challenge yourself to read at least 30 pages of a great book before you check your computer or mobile phone. Pick the right reading material and you'll soon find you've discovered an enjoyable pastime.
Create projects for yourself
It's amazing how much you can achieve when you're not glued to a screen. Do a list of one-hour evening projects. Some suggestions are organizing kitchen cupboards, cleaning your bedroom. Then try to do one each evening.
Mandy Harvey is a 29-year-old singer from Florida. She lost most of her ability to hear when she was 18.
Harvey became a singer in her teens. _________ But she decided to start singing after she learned how to feel a song's beat through the wooden floor of a stage or theater. She watches carefully to make sure her musical instruments are tuned correctly and she is singing in the correct pitch.
Harvey is now a professional singer. But not many people in the United States had heard of her until Tuesday night. That changed when she appeared on the television show “America's Got Talent”The show has four judges who watch people perform and decide if they should continue in the competition.
Harvey said, "I gave up singing after I lost my hearing. But I want to do more with my life than just give up." As she was singing, one camera cut away to capture images of people in the theater. Many were seen crying. At one point, everyone stood up and cheered. By Wednesday afternoon, a video of Harvey's performance had been played 46 million times.
Why? Shortly after she finished singing, Simon Cowell, one of the judges, gave her a golden star into the air. That meant Harvey could move on to the final round of the talent competition. Cowell said," I've done this a long time, and that was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen and heard."
Many people wrote online that Harvey's performance was encouraging, and they will not give up on anything they want to do, either.
Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for birds, other animals and many different plants.
It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know nature. He had seen some red-tail hawks, red foxes, wood turtles and other animals. He also found special native flowers.
Suddenly it was reported that the "empty" land would be improved by a lot of houses on it. The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil would be covered with extra grounds.
When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted. Andrew wrote down clearly all the research he had done about the area, and how the houses would affect(影响)the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses.
Although he was only 12 years old, he had the courage and wisdom of a person much older.
Andrew's teachers described him as a gentle, shy and active. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign(签字), who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people.
In the end, the land remained a safe place for birds, animals and plants that belonged there.
Andrew won many prizes for his brave and great work to stop the houses being built, and he helped save the environment.
