    All through the winter, the Esquimaux (爱斯基摩人) live in houses made of snow. These small houses are very clean and white when they are new. They can soon turn dirty, but pieces of fresh snow make them new again. Sometimes the Esquimaux build their small houses with the wood that they find along the seaside.

    However, they aren't always so lucky. When they can't get wood, they use the snow. It is so cold that the snow becomes very hard, so the small houses are strong enough in the whole winter. The windows of these houses are not made of glass, but of ice.

    When the warm weather comes, the houses become water slowly. The Esquimaux get wet as they lie in bed, and often catch a cold. They are glad to get away from the small snow houses and live in their tents during the summer.

    Every year there is a Spring Festival in China. Usually it is in January or February. It is the most important festival in China. So before it comes, everyone has to prepare things.     When you are learning English, you find it not clever to put an English sentence, word for word, into your own language. Take the sentence "How do you do?" for example. If you look up each word in the dictionary, one at a time, what is your translation? It must be a wrong sentence in your own language. Languages do not just have different sounds, they are different in many ways. It's important to learn the rules for word order in the study of English, too. If the speakers put words in a wrong order, the listener can't understand the speaker's sentence easily. Sometimes when the order of words in an English sentence is changed, the meaning of the sentence changes. But sometimes the order is changed, the meaning of the sentence doesn't change. Let's see the difference between the two pairs of sentences. "She only likes apples." "Only she likes apples."

    "I have seen the film already." "I have already seen the film." When you are learning English, you must do your best to get the spirit(精髓) of the language and use it as the English speakers do.

    I don't think all household chores are boring. But some really are. Every day after breakfast, I have to clean the table. On weekends, I have to clean the bathroom and do the dishes after dinner.

    There are two things that I hate most in life—cleaning the bathroom and doing the dishes. My mom often says, "Amy, clean your bedroom. It's a mess(杂乱)." I don't think it's really that messy. But mom just checks my room every day and tells me to clean up "this mess". Of course I promise her each time that I will clean it up—when I have the time.
